Mangaluru, Sep 16: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Wednesday September 16 staged a protest in front of the DC's office demanding the scrapping of the ongoing Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project and urged the government to find an alternative.

Addressing the protestors, K Ramesh, ABVP state secretary said, "ABVP is not against providing water to other districts but there should have been a full-fledgef meeting with the DK district prior to finalizing the project, and the government should have taken the people into confidence.

"The taxpayers' money is going to be wasted as fresh report says that there is only 9 TMC of water available. The pipes which have already arrived here will be of no use. The central and the state governments have to find an alternative to the problems of the north Karnataka districts. The CM has to organize a meeting to discuss the pros and cons of the project and communicate them to the public. Till the people feel confidet that the Western Ghats will not be harmed or there will be no water shortage to coastal region, the project has to be stopped.

"ABVP backs former union minister Janardhan Poojary who has urged the chief minister to scrap the project in a letter. ABVP is ready to fight for this cause and will not rest till the demands are met," he asserted.

Addressing the protestors ABVP vice-president Suhan said, "The government's decision to execute Yettinahole project will create a huge water crisis in the district. The people of DK cannot turn off the lights in our houses to light someone else's house, we also need to survive. We are not camels, we are human beings. The people of villages and students are on roads and protesting against the project but the people of the city are not concerned. The statement of Congress leader M Veerappa Moily in support of the project is irrational and ABVP strongly condemns it. ABVP will intensify the protest and will organize hunger strikes till our demands are met."

ABVP also organized a protest rally from Jyothi cirle to DC's office. Hundreds of students from various colleges participated in the protest.

What were the ABVP doing when Sadananda Gowda approved this project and also approved Nandikoor for power project!?. The funny thing is that the people are not understanding that political parties are one behind the scenes!. See for example, when NDA came to power under Modi the first thing they did was to raise the fuel and railway ticket prices!. The reason they gave was, this price rise was increased by the congress government but not implemented because of elections and hence they are merely implementing the same!. Congress retorted by saying that if BJP wanted they could have withdrawn the price rise!. Similar is going on now in case of Yettinahole!. Congress is saying they are merely implementing the project approved by the previous BJP government and already the house under BJP has unanimously approved the project and now congress cant do anything!. At the same time BJP is saying that even though they approved the project, congress has full power to withdraw the project!. Now people please tell me!, whom we should believe!?.

In the name of projects our ministers makes crores of money. Why should they bother about common man. They can accumulate money for next 4-5 generations. They can survive even without water because they have money power which can buy anything of luxurious living. Do you think they really live in DK or Udupi district. They have their 2nd house in some other places. Lets protest & keep these ministers away from looting taxpayers money

We cannot blindly blame DVS and Moily for this. Because CM has to take care of entire Karnataka. Though dvs is a mangalorian he cannot do discrimination among people. In the welfare of the north Karnataka people he might have given a nod as requested by moily. And Mr moily has done what people of his constituency demanded. The real problem was with the MLA's and people who were there in DK district at the time of passing of this project as they have not protested intensively and allowed bills passed in the parliament. If the people unaware of the consequences about the project then they could have been guided/explained by our local netas. Then people would have given the support to our DK netas and protested.

These students are fools and just doing drama and nothing else. They are collecting money to have a party in the evening. If they are really interested, they shuld protest in front of Nalim and Sadananda Gowda bungalows and not on the road. They are just disrupting common people. They want to show that they are not less than goondas. Shame on you guys.

Mr Ronald D, from Udupi.... What you said??? ABVP students are wasting parents money by bunking classes right??? Listen, today's students are not fools... They know in which activities they have to involve... Being an Udupi citizen, don't you have atleast common sense to how to comment... These students are doing such a great work, which cannot be done by people like me and you... Saving River Netravathi is the need of the hour and it's the most responsibility of each and every citizens of Mangaluru and Udupi... And at final, Indian Democracy, Constitution and Law has given right to protest for each and every citizens of the Nation.... These students have awareness about the burning issue and they did the protest against it... Who are you to question their Right of Protest???
