Right wing activist arrested in Pansare murder case

Mumbai, Sep 16, (PTI) : A man allegedly having links with rightwing outfit 'Sanatan Sanstha' was today arrested in connection with the killing of veteran Communist leader and rationalist Govind Pansare in February this year.

Sameer Gaikwad, in his early 30s, was arrested from Sangli in a joint operation by Kolhapur and local police, based on leads obtained through electronic surveillance.

Inspector General of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma, heading the SIT in the case, told reporters in Kolhapur that Sameer is an active member of Sanatan Sanstha since 1998.

"Not only Sameer, but also his entire family is associated with Sanatan," Verma said.

Reacting to the charge, Sanatan spokesperson Sandip Shinde said Sameer is not guilty of the crime he is being accused of and has been falsely implicated in the case.

Sameer was taken into custody after police went through his "innumerable" phone call records.

He was produced in a court at Kolhapur in western Maharashtra which remanded him in police custody till September 23.

Pansare (81) was gunned down outside his home in Sagar Mala locality of Kolhapur city on February 16 and succumbed to his injuries on February 20 at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital.

Sanatan Sanstha had grabbed headlines after the Panvel, Thane and Vashi blasts that took place in Maharashtra in 2007 in which the Mumbai ATS had chargesheeted six members of the organisation and its front, the Hindu Janjagriti Samiti.

In 2009, a low intensity bomb went off in Goa for which members of the right wing organisation were chargesheeted. The blast took place at Madgaon in Goa on October 16, 2009, the eve of Diwali.

Two activists of the Sanstha had succumbed to injuries when the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) they were carrying in a scooter - also owned by a Sanstha member - exploded prematurely.

Pansare, a senior Communist Party of India (CPI) leader, was a prominent social activist in Maharashtra and worked for the welfare of the poor and suppressed.

His popular book Shivaji Kon Hota (Who was Shivaji), projected Shivaji as the people's king as against his portrayal as a Hindu bigot by certain right wing outfits and fringe groups.

The book countered the propaganda of the Hindutva outfits and pointed out that Shivaji was a secular ruler whose top generals and associates were Muslims.

Pansare's frequent speeches challenging the communal agenda of right-wing outfits angered them.

His family has been demanding a probe into his murder. They had also filed a petition in the Bombay High Court which had asked Maharashtra government to file its response to the petition seeking constitution of special investigation team (SIT) to probe the killing.

Till now, the probe by police teams had not yielded much apart from vague probable sketches of the assassins and the recovery of a couple of motorbikes from Kolhapur city which were suspected to have been used by the killers.

In April, the state government constituted a SIT to probe the case.

The arrest comes close on the heels of the recent killing of Kannada scholar and researcher M M Kalburgi at Dharwad in Karnataka on August 30. Another rationalist Narendra Dabholkar was killed in Pune in 2013.

Left parties and rationalist forums have voiced deep concern over the delay in tracking down and apprehending the killers of these social activists and held that fundamental elements could be behind these murders.

The Karnataka government yesterday announced Rs 5 lakh reward to those who could provide clues about the murder of Kalburgi.

Dabholkar, who spent much of his life exposing sham rituals, miracles, black magic, and godmen, was murdered in Pune in 2013 and there has been no breakthrough in his case yet

Few days back wife and daughter of Pansare came to Dharwad to pay homage to Dr.Kalburgi and met Karnataka Police and also gave a press statement in Dharwad that Maharashtra Police know who are the Culprits but they are not catching them. This created pressure on Kolhapur Police to swing into action.
The Murder of Pansare and Kalburgi seems to be inter-linked.

In Karnataka Hindu Right wing activists are very active in bordering Talukas of Belagavi district. They have direct link with right wing activists of Maharashtra based in Kolhapur. As I was in Belagavi for a long period I am aware of it.

    Dear Ravi,
Agree with you that Hindu right wing activists were always there in Belgaum but did not get much prominence/attention as the focus there was more on the border dispute with Karnataka with the MES (Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti) backed by the Shiv Sena demanding that Belgaum be part of Maharashtra.
However, now with a right wing govt. at the centre the border dispute has been pushed to the back burner and this has given right wing activists an opportunity to grab the limelight.

Right wing activists have stark opposition to reformers, rationalists and anti superstitious.
Because if society is reformed, fundamentalist will have no job.

Since Karnataka CID is doing their work very fast and are about to catch the culprits in Dr.Kalaburgi murder case, the Maharashtra Police were afraid that Karnataka CID will get the credit of catching murderers of Kalburgi as well as Pansare as both murders are done by same Organization. So Maha Police swung into action and arrested this Vishnu Gaikwad. In fact Maha Police knew long back who were the real murderers of Pansare but they did not care to catch them because of some external pressure.
This Suspect Vishnu Gaikwad is from Belgaum district from where even Pramod Mutalik hails, and Car Driver of Pranavananda swami namely Viresh Adapa was also active in Belgaum.

Unfortunately shivaji's history has been heavily hindutvaised....much of the credit goes to shiv sena...Later this concept spread to tulunadu...But people are unaware one third of shivajis army was consisted of Muslims....Some of his top army generals were muslims...While hindutva force indirectly refer Afzal to muslims in numerous portrait around the street...but they fail to understand the fact that....afzal's close secretary was a hindu...when afzal was killed by shivaji it is he who raised sword against Shivaji...Shivaji himself had to face casteism problem...i.e from his own people...He fought against Rajput...same like how Aurangazeb fought against Deccan sultans..Aurangazeb's top military commander was a hindu...He was one of the king who led a life of simplicity...with less extravaganza nor he used state's treasure for his personal use, while much of his earlier mughal predecessors chose lavish life and grand mausoleum after death...he just chose simple open burial in midst of sufis in khuldabad...only later a small mausoleum being built by one of later Deccan sultans on his grave......But unfortunately... aurangazeb has been heavily demonised in indian history...

Law and order situation in India is going from bad to worst. The main and only culprits are politicians and their party. Just hoping and waiting for AAP to take control of this whole situation. No doubt they have their own and outside hurdles but when they gain strength I am sure they will meet people's expectations.
