Robber wanted in 10 states held in Delhi


New Delhi, Sep 16 (IANS): A robber, wanted to stand trial in 10 states, was arrested here for his involvement in around 50 cases of robbery in the national capital, Delhi Police said on Wednesday.

Shahnawaz, 32, is a resident of Chandni Mahal in central Delhi and was arrested on Tuesday.

"Shahnawaz committed robberies in Kolkata (West Bengal), Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujrat and Rajasthan," Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhairo Singh Gurjar said.

During interrogation, he confessed to have committed around 50 cases of robbery in Delhi and many in other states.

Police said Shahnawaz was a bus driver by profession but left job after coming in contact of Fahim, a snatcher.

"Later, he came in contact of one Akbar and started committing robberies. After death of Akbar, he came in contact of one man named Ashiq Ali. With him he committed a spade of robberies in Delhi and NCR," the official said.

Police said for the last two years Shahnawaz was in contact with a criminal of western Uttar Pradesh, named Waseem, and committed a spate of robberies throughout India.
