Seven killed in heavy rain in China province


Beijing, Sep 16 (IANS): At least seven people are confirmed to have died and 15 remain missing after heavy rain from late Tuesday to Wednesday lashed Yunnan province of southwest China, local authorities said.

In Changning county, two people were killed and five were still missing after torrential rain from 2 a.m. to 1 p.m. caused landslides in the townships of Tianyuan and Mangshui. Thirty-five houses collapsed while 119 houses were damaged, Xinhua reported.

In Huaping county, heavy rain triggered floods from higher ground, which killed five, injured 15 others and 10 people remained missing. The floods also caused 810 houses to collapse and swept away 610 cars.

Residents were being relocated while rescuers continue to search for the missing.
