The week started with a Carnatic classical vocal concert by Ester Noronha. It was a good start to the week.
On another side, a protest meeting was held in Kundapur against alleged religious conversions by Christians in the name of social service. The anti-conversion awareness meet was organized by Hindu Janajagruti Vedike and Bajaranga Dal at Shastri circle on Monday July 2.
The roads have been the biggest problem to mankind from time immemorial. The National Highway (NH) 17 in Udupi district has become a nightmare to motorists, since there lie potholes on a few stretches of the highway, while in some other stretches the asphalt has turned smoother thereby making driving vulnerable to mishaps.
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) introduced on lines of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has been heralded into the city, last week. NA is being seen as a beacon of hope for those unfortunate addicts caught in the vice-like grip of drugs as well as in the stranglehold of drug traffickers and racketeers.
In a rare coincidence, major fire mishaps were reported simultaneously from two prominent places in Mangalore. First was at the premises of Accurate Veneers and Wood Products Factory at Baikampady Industrial area, in which the factory went into flames. In a similar incident, a footwear godown caught fire at Bunder area around the same time causing major loss and damage to property.

Avoid Trains during Rains
The Southern Railways had revised train services following heavy rains at Mumbai for Sunday July 1 and Monday July 2.
Over the past many years we have been hearing about mishaps of trains, and most of the mishaps take place in the month of July and August. That is due to heavy rainfall. As a result of rains, landslides occur and also stones roll down as a result of soil erosion, thus causing train mishaps. So in order to avoid such hazards the railway governement decided to stop the movement of trains for two days as heavy rains and winds were expected in the city. Travelling in trains during rainy seasonis is regarded as very risky by many. So till the month of August, a good number of people are seen opting for other means of transport.

Never Trust Anyone
Anand Shenoy (27), an employee with Vijaya Supari in Puttur was beaten to death by two of his colleagues on Monday July 2.
Many a time such incidents take place, where a person is killed by his own friends, relatives, family members etc. One finds it hard to trust others, other than trusting the oneself. People get assaulted for no reason, and there are some who just assault others and give a pretext later. A telling example is the assault at Kundapur hospital. The assailant gave a statement that it was mistaken identity. Even if so, was it right to assault any other person thus taking law into one's hands?

Increasing Thefts
Thieves who broke open into a house of U Ravindra Naik at Kodialbail on Jail Road near here decamped with 5 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 50,000 in cash on Wednesday July 4 night. In another case of theft the same night, valuables and several articles were stolen from Sri Mahalingeshwar Temple at Manipur near Kalmanje Dendurkatte in Udupi.
Thefts have increased in the undived Dakshina Kannada district. Every now and then we hear reports of thefts. Each of the theft is found to be executed in its own ingenious way. We might presume that technological advances could lessen the theft and crime rate. But, as a paradox, with the advancement of technology, thieves also appears to the adopting technical superior ways for theft.

Natural Calamities Cannot be Avoided
A cowshed and a rice mill which belonged to Lakshmi Narayan Hatwar, a resident of Kome Koravadi of Thekkatte, near Kundapur were gutted in a major fire on Thursday July 5. Often property gets destroyed because of natural causes or otherwise, like wilful motives. This week witnessed three incidents of property getting damaged caused by different factors.

A group of people, suspected to be Naxalites, barged into the house of Keshav Hegde at Hulgarbailu in the Sringeri police station limits in Chikmagalur district late on Wednesday. The 12-member group took away a single-barrelled breach-loading gun and Rs. 54,000 in cash from the house. The group also reportedly threatened the family against informing the police about the incident.
Violence is increasing day by day. Whether such activities are indulged in by real Naxalites or any anti-social elements under the garb of Naxalites is not clearly known. But, although their demands could be genuine, the violent means adopted are not justifiable. However, the police force should be more alert from now onwards and keep track on anti-social elements so that violent acts can be prevented.

Bring an End to Road Mishaps
Four persons were injured in two separate road mishaps that took place at Nidigal and Dharmasthala near Ujire near here on Thursday July 5.
A week will not be complete without a road mishap. At least one road mishap in a week should take place, or it almost appears so. This week witnessed two road mishaps both following brake failure. If brakes fail, it is impossible for the drivers to take control of the consequences. Most of the mishaps take place because of bad condition of roads or rash driving. But this time both the mishaps had a different reason. This is a caution to everyone - before starting your vehicle every day, check the most vital parts of the vehicle as a matter of habit.

All Stones Are Not Diamonds
Two persons who were trying to palm off some stones as diamonds were arrested by District Crime Investigation Bureau (DCIB) on Friday July 6. The arrested have been identified as Kasim (70), a resident of Nekkiladi near Kadaba and Sikhandar Ahmad (30) of Savanoor in Haveri district.
No one gets to know about the fake stones, so most of the times people buy them thinking them to be real. The public has to be cautious while buying diamonds or other precious stones. Even the gold merchants may sometimes selling fake stones as diamonds. There is a proverb saying 'All that glitters is not Gold', similarly people should keep in their mind, another new proverb that 'All that shines is not a diamond'.

Fr Baptist Menezes assumed charge as Episcopal vicar of Udupi district on Friday July 6 evening.
Earlier, he was the director of Fr Muller Charitable Institutions in Mangalore. Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, Vicar General of the Diocese officiated the handing over ceremony.
As the Mangalore diocese is very large, the bishiop alone cannot handle it entirely. Hence an Episcopal vicar is functioning from Udupi. Fr Baptist Menezes who was the director of Fr Muller Charitable Institutions in Mangalore assumed charge as Episcopal Vicar at Udupi, succeeding Fr Valerian D'Souza. Fr Patrick Rodrigues took over as the director of Fr Muller institutions.
