Malaysia arrests eight suspects linked to Bangkok blast

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 23 (IANS): Malaysian police have arrested eight people with suspected links to the deadly blast at Bangkok's Erawan Shrine, the police said on Wednesday.

"So far we have arrested eight people, four of them are local. They were arrested for involvement in human trafficking activities," Xinhua news agency quoted deputy police chief Noor Rashid Ibrahim as saying.

The suspects were arrested in Kuala Lumpur and the northern state of Kelatan bordering Thailand.

So far, there was no concrete evidence or confessions of their direct involvement in the attack, Noor Rashid said.

Malaysian police are working with their Thai counterpart for further investigation. A potential extradition requires evidence from the Thai authorities and has to go through legal process.

Thai media reported that senior Thai police officials have flown to Kuala Lumpur to see the suspects.

Powerful explosion hit the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok on August 16, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 120 others.
