Six Indian fishermen arrested in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sep 24 (IANS): The navy has arrested six Indian fishermen for fishing in Sri Lankan waters, an official said on Thursday.

The arrests were made on Wednesday night off Kovilan Point in the island's north, navy spokesman Indika Silva told Xinhua. Two fishing trawlers were seized.

The arrested fishermen and the trawlers were brought to Karainagar and handed over to officials of the fisheries and aquatic resources department in Jaffna on Thursday.

Indian fishermen are routinely arrested for allegedly intruding into Sri Lankan waters. India and Sri Lanka are divided by a narrow strip of sea.
