Udupi, Sep 29: The officials of various departments in joint operation on Tuesday September 29 rescued 10 children, including eight girls, from Malpe port, where they were employed for picking fish.

The children were then handed over to the child welfare committee for their rehabilitation and education.

Based on a complaint that children had been engaged in picking fish at Malpe port, the district labour department along with district district Child Labour Project Society, education department, woman and child welfare department, child rescue unit and Spoorthi Vishwasada Mane, Bantakal led a joint operation along with BSW students of Tenkanidiyur college to rescue the children.

Among the 10 children, eight girls were sent to children's home for girls at Nittur and two boys were handed over to Vishwasada Mane for their rehabilitation.

Udupi labour officer H P Gnanesh, project director of district Child Labour Project Society Prabhakar Achar, labour inspector Jeevan Kumar and others were part of the operation.
