Mangaluru, Sep 30: A protest by locals led by Congress leaders and the Nagarika Samiti was held against the new toll booth near NIT-K Suratkal near here on Wednesday September 30.

The protestors blocked the highway for about 15 minutes, which resulted in a huge traffic jam extending up to three kilometres.

The toll plaza, set up by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is situated near the NITK at Suratkal on the national highway 66. Vehicles traveling between Suratkal to Nanthoor (18.362 kilometers) will have to cough up money to use the highway. Once the spent amount is recovered, the toll fee will come down by 40 % said sources.

The protestors claimed that the toll collection was against the law as there is already another toll booth a few kilometres away

Addressing the protest, MLA North Mohiuddin Bava said, "As per rules, toll booths should be set up within at last 60 km of each other, but here the Hejamady toll booth is just 10 km away. Also, there is no service road, the highway is two-lane without proper drainage, and even the Baikampady bridge is not ready.

"The Supreme Court has clearly stated that no toll should be collected for bad roads. The road here is in pathetic condition, hence toll collection cannot be allowed. We will stand by the people on this issue," he added.

MLC Ivan D'Souza who also joined the protest said that he would talk to the officials concerned and do justice to the people.

District Youth Congress president Mithun Rai said, "When the people do not want the toll gate, it is better to break it down.

He also alleged that BJP leaders had got contract for the tool booth, and that the staff at the toll gate had been behaving like 'goons'.

The tahsildar came to the spot and accepted a memorandum from the Nagarika Samiti in this regard. The Samiti would also hold a meeting with the DC to discuss the issue.

The protestors also pointed out that as per rules, there can be no toll gate within city coporation limits, but NIT-K Suratkal area falls under MCC.

DC defers toll collection

Following the protest held at Suratkal by locals led by Congress leaders, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim issued an order postponing the collection of toll at the plaza by one week.

"In view of the law and order problem in and around the toll plaza at Suratkal, the proposed collection of toll with effect from October 1, 2015 will be suspended for next 7 days without fail," stated the order.

The toll collection was supposed to begin from October 1. A petty toll collection at NH is a bigger issue than Yettinahole and Nethravathi diversion to Congress Party. Congress politicians are struggling to make their presence felt in the region. See the leaders in the photo all are well-built and well nourished with tax-payers money. Most of them do not have an appealing face and personality essentially required for a leader to represent people. One Mr. Bawa has reportedly told "For us, you people are more than High Court and Supreme Court". Then why the hell these leaders were missing in action when the whole region was boiling on the issue of Nethravathi diversion and all the people were on road in protest mode? NH blockade at BC Road was forcefully restricted to 15 minutes by police with coercionary tactics whereas NH blockade at toll plaza went without any hurdles wherein district administration and police played their role as facilitators. Tahasildar moved to the protest site to accept memorandum!

Congress cannot regain face in the district even if they can manage hundreds of protests with reasons that may not effect lives of common man. Their failure to support a people movement on a vital issue will cost them dear. If the party and local leaders are unable to read mind of people and their writings on the wall, you can better think of winding-up the party....But what about few of these white kurtawallahs? They will not fit anywhere in a productive environment. If they are allowed to roam on roads without any engagement, they will pose a potential threat to society!

hey... come on. unless you know the situation and fact please don't comment. it may give a very wrong message. We are from the region and it's completely an absolute nuisance to bring a toll gate here. Road condition is so bad and there is zero % facilities which a tall gate should have before starting. No service road available. Colleges in and around the place identified. traders like fish sellers, students, workers travel number of times across this place... absolutely unfit place for a toll gate to come up. SOme bridges are not yet completely constructed. many more things like service roads to be constructed, path wholes to be filled up and before everything they want to start toll gate to loot the public. Bloody they took 10 years to complete the road and they don't have any right to start this toll gate. Legally also there are so many clauses are there accordinglg to which this toll gate can not come up at this place and a this point of time. Please don't comment with out knowing the subject please...

Dear protesters, it may be any party or organization, you have the rights to protest but do not protest by blocking the roads, somebody may be fighting death on the way to hospital, mother may expect a child, a youth may be late for the interview for a new job, and some traveling to airport, railway station. Keep politics apart!

Toll collection was initiated by A B Vajpayee in 2004 after borrowing money from IMF & World Bank to fund the National Highway.
The duty of the government is to provide infrastructure as they claim in Income Tax or Excise collection ads.
Not even 2% tax collected as Road Tax gets for roads.
Its Time for protest Nation wide to stop this day light Robbery.

Exorbitant Charges are nothing but daylight robbery of People & vehicle owners who already had paid Road Tax.
Its time to amend the law to limit the toll by half of the proposed if at all it is inevitable.
It is mockery of democracy, whether Government is for the People or People are for the government to fleece.
