Bengaluru: State writes off Rs 296.52 crore interest on farm loans

Daijiworld Media Network- Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Oct 1: As a major relief to the farmer fraternity, the state government has decided to write off Rs 296.52 crore interest on the farm loans availed by farmers in the state.

The announcement was made by cooperation minister H S Mahadev Prasad on Wednesday in Bengaluru at a press conference.

The state government also allowed farmers to pay, the instalments of the current financial year loans, in the next year. But the government refused to entertain the demand of writing off of the entire loan. Both these offers apply only to medium as well as long- term loans amounting to Rs 2,300 crore borrowed from cooperative banks by 2.13 lac farmers.

The decision comes in the wake of severe draught faced in 136 taluks of the state and also the series of suicides committed by the distressed farmers.

The minister said that the farmers will not receive any notices either to repay the loan instalment this year or to pay the interest for the current year as he has already instructed the cooperative banks to follow the directives with immediate effect. The writing off of interest effectively means that the government will pay the Rs 296.52 crore interest to the cooperative banks.

Prasad criticized the centre for discrimination against the state. One of its directives forced the state government to withdraw Rs 3000 crore from the apex bank and to invest the same in government securities. Hence the government’s lending capacity took a beating, he said.

He also blamed Nabard bank of reducing its lending from 50 to 40 per cent. The state without any option has decided to transfer Rs 5,000 from other departments to the apex bank, he said.

Prasad revealed that the nationalised banks with total deposits of Rs 5.62 lac crore have lent agriculture loans of Rs 23,000 crore to 21 lac farmers while the cooperative institutions with total deposits of Rs 22,000 crore have lent Rs 9,800 crore agriculture loan.

It is very sick to see people fighting one category of people are supporting congress and another BJP this is were we are loosing. It is clear that govt is doing it for vote bank rather than that there are many poor students who have taken education loans, they should have thought of giving some subsidy to them always why only farmers .

Excellent ! but poor way of communicating. Congress don't know how to showoff their work like Modi. Modi will take all credit to him and take certificate from public. If they would have announced before BBMP, they would have got atleast 100 seats...wake up congress..

We have lost more than 500 farmers what is the use of writing off now which was not done when there were serial suicides...But govt was busy in BBMP elections. Now the actual farmers are not benefited but MLA's MP's posing as farmers enjoying the benefit. Waste CM ever.

So the difficit of 296 crores will be covered from pockets of poor and middle class people by taxes.???? what a justice?
Preventive measure is, the banks/ lenders while lending money to the farmers must make sure that farmers land are fertile enough for crops rather it is useless land and belong to multi crore Jameendars/politicians.JH

    Farmers are committing suicide.
    Central is least bothered.

UPA government gave compensations or written off their / farmers loans

THERE ARE FOOLS AND CHAAIWAALA BHAKTS WHO SAY FARMERS SUICIDE IS THE GIFT OF CONGRESS.

Good gesture. Let there be some relief on these indebted farmers due to draughts and other conditions.
In the mean time, make some provision (Funds) for the Party too. Distress call has already been announced.

This is a temporary relief. The farm land is getting divided between the family members and they can't survive with an acre of land. Govt must train the small farmers to develop some other skills so that they can earn money by some other means.Otherwise farmers continue to commit suicide year after year.

    Dear jeevan, mangalore,

The problem with Karnataka is the central's policy of Malathaai dhorane.

Chaaiwaala is rounding in luxurious cars in the foreign countries and he has not time to meet our poor farmers.

Honorable siddharamaiah is meeting the poor farmers and gives remunerations.

..it may sound good initiative but its not..how many years we can bail out farmers and from whose pocket..how a farmer is different from small scale entrepreneurs, even after paying huge tax if he gets in trouble who will bail out him, nobody!!..to bail out farmers other TAX payers has to pay, not SIDDARAMAYYA..bail out going on since 60 years..if we total bail out amount of all states of one year it may cross several lakhs crores..instead if that amount effectively used for scientific irrigation system like ISRAEL, it will be a long term effect..moreover, bail out system will created willful defaulters and cooperative banks/societies has to bear the burnt since many time Govt promises refund but wont reach banks..almost all sugar factories run by politicians families & trust, they sell sugar wont pay farmers for sugarcane supply..then one day Govt(politician themselves) bail out or write off loans/Interest..its day light robbery of public money..

Writing off loans of deserving farmers is a great step taking by CM Siddu.
In India, thousands of crores subsidy taken Nano plant, Liquor baron Malya's loans interest is also considered for writing off!
What's happening in this country is eye opener for few, but is difficult to understand for common man.
