Udupi, Oct 3: Udupi district authority and City Municipal Council jointly observed the 147th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi at Bhujanga Park, Ajjarkad, here on Friday October 2.

District incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake along with Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj and DC R Vishal garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Addressing the gathering Sorake said, "To commemorate his visit to Udupi in 1934 a statue of Gandhiji has been erected at Bhujanga Park. He was the embodiment of truth, peace, non violence and honesty. An observation of the present global scenario reveals an atmosphere of turmoil.

Citing an incident which happened at Isur village he stressed on the need to adopt Gandhiji’s principals in our life. We must commemorate former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s birthday on this auspicious occasion.

Udupi MLA Pramodh Madhwaraj speaking on the occasion said, "Gandhiji was the first person who influenced not just Indians but also citizens of other countries by his simplicity in life. He traveled to each nook and corner of the country at a time when transport had not advanced."

He also added, "Gandhiji’s ideals are gradually being forgotten and instead being restricted to speeches alone. The concept of installing of statues in public places is increasing, however people show greater interest towards money.

DC R Vishal quoting Gandhiji’s lines said, "The government should implement programmes with the poor in mind. 10% reservation for SC/ST category in government schemes is already in practise but the Koraga community is given less priority in society.

Sorake handed over the mobile van keys to the district health department and distributed sanction letters for housing loans among 13 beneficiaries of the district.

CMC president Yuvaraj, commissioner T Manjunathaiah and others were present.
