Mangaluru, Oct 4: Anjaneya Reddy, president of Shashwata Neeravari Horata Samiti, Chikkaballapur which has been fighting for a permanent solution to the drinking and irrigation water needs of Kolar and Kolar and Chikkaballapur regions, on Sunday October 4 said that people of his region would not want Dakshina Kannada to face water crisis because of the Yettinahole project, as they do now.

He was addressing a meeting at Hotel Srinivas in the city, organized by Karavali Jeevanadi Netravati Samrakshana Samiti.

"We are already in pain and we do not want the same kind of crisis to be faced by the people of this region. Because of fluoride in water, people of our region are suffering from diseases. We do not want the Yettinahole project if it is going to affect the people of this region," Reddy said.

"However, if there is no adverse impact on this region, then we request the people of Dakshina Kannada to cooperate and give us water. Interest of people of both the regions should be taken into consideration. I request all of you to visit Kolar and see the situation there," he urged.

"Let us not get trapped by people who are misusing this project for political gains. People of neither region should get into friction on this issue," he added.

Retired IAS officer V V Bhat said, "There are three petitions filed in the Green Tribunal against Yettinahole project - by MCC mayor Purushotham Chitrapur, Kishore Kumar from Hassan and Yathiraj. The state government has said that it will conduct a social impact assessment survey. The whole coastal region will be affected by this project, so there is need to conduct the social impact assessment throughout the region. We are not against giving water to anyone. But there are many flaws in the current detailed project report (DPR). We will be holding a rally to Yettinahole."

Former MLA Vijayakumar Shetty said, "This project was initiated in 2011 at an estimated cost of Rs 8,300 crore, but now it has reached Rs 13,000 crore - from where will this money come? It is the government's responsibility to provide water, but when a such project is taken up it needs to be discussed with the people of the region. The chief minister had promised to hold meeting with the people of this region but till date nothing has been done. This government has no stand on this issue. Water for this region is our priority, it is above politics and party affiliations. Let us all join together and solve this problem."

Prof S G Mayya said, "From the beginning there have been no changes in the DPR, only the project's name has changed. There are many rivulets but the main river is Netravati. This project is misleading in every stage. First the government has to be stopped from executing the project. We are not opposed to giving drinking water to anyone from Netravati, but not through this project. They say 24 TMC of water can be obtained out of the 34 TMC available. But the available water itself is 23 TMC as per the National Institute of Hydrology, which means they will give away all the water that is available.

"There are three three water boards in Karnataka and these are for irrigation. Drinking water can be pumped through pipelines, why should the Western Ghats be spoiled by building weirs? This will impact not only the coastal region but also the entire southern India. We have seen the impact of projects in Himalayan region, but we have not learnt from it. We are not saying the entire project should be scrapped, but the DPR should be withdrawn. In the Green Tribunal the petitioner has said 'not to stop or cancel this project anytime but if necessary the Tribunal may ask the other respondents to have a relook of the project and move ahead'. This means reject the project, propose a new project and take care of the interest of Kolar and Chikkaballapur people, and thereby safeguard the interest of the people of this region," he said.

Advocate Shankar Bhat said, "Netravati is the only source of water to the coastal region. There are many industries and SEZ coming up in this region and there will be scarcity of water. So the people of this region need to fight against this project,"

M G Hegde, Purushotham Chitrapur, Denis D'silva, Ajith Rai Malady and others were present.

Instead of making arguments with the kannadigas, Tulu Nadu people ( Tuluvas and Konkanis) should fight for Tulu Rajya and solve all these problems once and for all. Why beat around the bush? Kannada language also should be rejected as it has been unjustly imposed on Tulu Nadu

classic example to evident that people want to live in harmony. They don't want to put others hungry to fill their hunger. That's the fact. All the mess and crisis is created by the bloody political power for their benefit. Look at the cost impact, effort spent on protest, man hours wasted in these strikes, money already poured in this stupid project... who is responsible for this ? Will Moily is going to bear the expenses. will these be claimed back... absolute waste of money, man power, man hours... but these politicians remain unimpacted and untouched.... only the public is suffering because it's our money and efforts wasted. As some one already highlighted, there should be a CBI enquiry to investigate who is insisting this project and why ? then all the truth will come out.... pity on ourselves to be lead by these stupid politicians...

The Activities that have taken place in the past 2000 years have
    3 phases :

a)From AD 1 till the Industrial Revolution to about 1800.
    b)From 1800 to 1980 :Next 180 years
    c)From 1980 to 2000 :Next 18 years

Life had not really changed much till about 1960 in India .
An Engineer or a Doctor or a Teacher of the early 1900’s was not really much different from their counterparts of the early 1960’s.
Life was simple and wants were few and contentment common.

But the changes post 1980's have been amazing and those of the past decade have been mind boggling in all the spheres in the new age of Information Technology and Communication Technology.
An Engineer of the 1980’s cannot compete with an Engineer of 2013 and so also in most professions .
But Technology apart, the other aspect are more important especially the spiritual and values aspect have not kept pace with its developmental counterpart. Health aspects have taken a beating as well and we find more number getting afflicted with sickness at a young age with Heart Ailments, Lung ailments, Depression , Cancers and numerous other health complications some of which were unheard of in the 1960’s .

Lifestyles have changed and the fast life of the current era is taking its toll not just on Man & Beast but also the also the Environment. Both Beast & Environment are helpless & only react to MAN actions.
The Time for Man to act rightly is NOW.
The Green Tribunal is rightly against the Yettinahole project as it will further deplete the flora & fauna in the area which is being eyed by our ever greedy politicians both ruling as well as opposition. Both at the Centre & State .
We are living on the legacy of our children and have a duty to perform and preserve the Earth.
When we took birth we did see a lot of trees around and by the time we die, we should certainly leave more trees around us. The wishes of the localites should be respected and politicians should take a neutral stand .
