Bengaluru: BPO employee gang rape - 2 accused arrested

Updated

Bengaluru, Oct 7 (PTI): Two men were arrested today for alleged gang rape of a 22-year-old call centre employee here at knife point in their moving van after they offered to ferry her home.

Police said the accused were nabbed after the victim gave the random digits of the vehicle's numberplate.

The woman was waiting to hail a bus to return to her PG home and boarded the van which stopped by offering her a drop, City Police N S Megharikh told reporters.

"She was waiting for the BMTC (Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation) bus along with her friend to return to her PG home and boarded the van which stopped by and offered a drop. Her friend, however, insisted not to board the vehicle, but she (the victim) did not heed her appeal," the Police Commissioner said.

The woman, who hails from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, was allegedly gangraped on the night of October three by the vehicle driver and the cleaner, Megharikh said, adding the victim was taken to a deserted spot before she was dropped in Madiwala area here.

Police said for nearly three hours, the two men drove around deserted places of the Madivala area and raped the woman.

The men allegedly dumped the woman near a temple. The woman called her sister with whom she stays and friends, who rushed to the spot and took her to the St.John's Hospital nearby.

She was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and discharged yesterday, Megharikh said.
Asked whether the police will take action against the BPO company for not following the labour guidelines, Megharikh said, "We will look into the matter and do the needful."

The incident has come as a grim reminder of the 2012 gang rape of a paramedical student in Delhi, who later died, triggering a massive outrage across the nation.

In 2005, a 24-year-old employee of a city-based multi-national firm was raped and murdered by the cab driver who was later sentenced for life.

Driver, cleaner rape Bengaluru BPO employee

Bengaluru, Oct 6 (DHNS): A 22-year-old employee of a leading BPO in Madivala was gang-raped by the driver and cleaner of a tempo traveller she opted to travel in on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The incident came to light on Monday.

According to the police, the victim and her friend dined at a restaurant on Hosur Road on Saturday night. Later, her friend dropped her near Bommanahalli bus stop.

While she was waiting to catch a bus to reach her house in HSR Layout, a tempo traveller offered to drop waiting passengers to Madivala, Bommanahalli and HSR Layout.

The victim, a native of Madhya Pradesh, got into the vehicle as the “driver’s face was familiar”, the police said.

Vehicle takes deviation

There was nobody else in the vehicle. The victim grew suspicious and protested when they took a deviation from Hosur Main road.

She told them to stop and asked them where they were heading. The duo threatened her with a knife, took her to a secluded place and raped her.

Four hours later, around 2 am, they dropped her back to Bommanahalli bus stop, the police said. She managed to reach her house and contacted her friend, who rushed her to St John’s Medical College Hospital.

The police rounded up a few people based on the details provided by the victim. However, she said they were not the ones who committed the crime.

“We have formed three teams to arrest the duo. We have traced the vehicle registration number. We have completed all medical, legal and investigation formalities and the two will be arrested soon,” Additional Commissioner of Police (East) P Harishekharan told Deccan Herald.

The victim’s parents rushed to Bengaluru on Sunday and took her back to Madhya Pradesh.

The victim came to Bengaluru about a year ago. She would usually return home from office by bus or private vehicles, the police added.

While condemning this incident, it is in no way we can blame the police for such occurrences because when there have been so many, 'much publicized', incidents in this state and elsewhere in the country of rapes etc., at least, an educated lady should have had the brains to take precautions like not traveling alone late in the night or not taking lift from unknown persons etc., which is basic common sense!! By virtue of accepting a lift from unknown persons, that too late in the night, she had put herself in a 'vulnerable' situation and the result is that what has happened!!

In the society we live in there will no dearth of 'exploiters' of all hues and color, but it is our prime responsibility to take adequate precautions and care of ourselves rather than suffering later and passing the buck on the police force!!

The above is a personal opinion based on the news report and personal experiences during my decades long stay in a humming metro like Mumbai!!! Jai Hind!!!

News of rape, molestation, religious fights are everyday happening in Karnataka. The result of inefficient administration at the state level, were there is no proper law and order what else do you expect. Home minister George, and CM should wake up in putting law and order of the state in good hands. It's shame on Karnataka Govt. these kind of cases are increasing day by day. Before people start revolting against such incidents, it's high time the home minister and MP's & MLA's should find way to stop this crime happening again and again.

i would like to ask all sisters please take extra care when you travel alone, please inform your family or friends that you are in this spot and taking this cab or van by giving them that vehicle number.
i really don't understand this beast how they find such isolated and bushy places to do such evil things in those metro cities,
i still remember incident that happened in kudla itself which i like to share with you all after watching night show i was on my way back to home i saw a couple, husband and wife with small baby with her was been blocked by 3, 4 drunkards who were fully loaded and were misbehaving with them, i just saw that scene and got down from the car and called police right in front of them which made them to vacate that spot,
so i just did what i felt right that time saving those couples or else thing would have gone wrong.
my point here is that all men r not beast, there are good men also, this type of animals need to get harsh punishment so that this will be lesson for their lifetime.
    thanks.

Something wrong with the male instinct these days as it happens every where in India, we have many incidents recently in our two districts only. From ordinary labourers to Judges men get nasty...Men getting worse than beasts... luckily this girl survived as in most cases rapists kill the woman and dump the body somewhere. Only rigorous punishment can deter teh would be criminals. At the same time girls also take care that their attire and attitude will not invite trouble

I believe in "Precaution is better than cure." It does not mean that girl/ladies shouldn't go out in the night. But they must avoid travelling with unknown people.
