Bengaluru: Modi woos foreign investors, hopes for GST roll out in 2016

Updated

Bengaluru, Oct 6 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said India is a "bright spot" in global economic slowdown and assured foreign investors of favourable business conditions, including strong intellectual property rights protection.

He also said that the government hopes to roll out the Goods and Service Tax (GST) next year.

Renewing government's commitment to creating favourable conditions for business and industry, Modi said: "Never before is India so well prepared to absorb talent, technology and investment from outside."

"We have introduced the GST Bill in parliament; we are hopeful to roll it out in 2016," Modi said at the Indo-German Summit here, sharing the dais with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She is on a three-day visit to the country.

The GST bill is facing hurdles in the opposition dominated Rajya Sabha despite an aggressive push by the government for its passage.

At the Summit attended by the who's is who of the India Inc, particularly the IT sector, Modi also said India is committed to protecting Intellectual Property Rights of all innovators and entrepreneurs.

A comprehensive National IPR Policy is being finalised, he said, adding that it will be "progressive and forward looking".

"Such a huge potential for creation and production will not be available in any one country," the Prime Minister said as he spoke of the slew of steps taken by the government to ensure ease of doing business.

Modi said across the board the validity period of Industrial Licences had been increased and regulatory clearances including security and environmental expedited.

"We have taken very decisive steps to remove a number of long pending concerns of investors," he said.

PM Modi, Angela Merkel arrive in Bengaluru, visit Bosch facility

Bengaluru, Oct 6 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday visited German automotive major Bosch's facility in this tech hub for a firsthand view of its operations in India.

"Modi and Merkel viewed a powerpoint presentation on Bosch operations in India and walked through our innovation and vocational centres where research is done on innovative projects and skill development is imparted to our employees," a Bosch India official said.

Both the leaders also interacted with top executives of German firms operating in India, including Bengaluru, and exchanged views on how to help the government boost its 'Make in India' and 'Digitise India' initiatives for creating jobs and promote exports.

After Bosch visit, Modi and Merkel jointly participated in a tech event hosted by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) and the German Fraunhofer Institute on "Digitising Tomorrow".

Addressing the Summit, Merkel said German engineering and India's IT expertise are fused here in Bengaluru. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi and I are working together for reform of the UN Security Council through the G-4. Indian investors are warmly welcome in Germany. Germany and India have great opportunities in the area of digitization, infrastructure, energy supply," she said.

Earlier, Karnataka Governor Vajubhai R. Vala and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah received Modi who arrived by an Indian Air Force (IAF) at the HAL airport amid tight security.

Merkel, 61, who is on a three-day official visit to India since Sunday, flew into Bengaluru on Monday night with a large official-cum-business delegation to participate in the twin events with Modi.

This is why I like Sir Siddhramayya's reign,he never speaks loud if his government has not completed its tasks.Action and being practical is first preference. Not only that he is so charming in any avatar even Miss Merkel proved it by diverting her attention to him while PM stands lone sighting their talks.Even Namo also Good looking with beard, but I wish he treated All Indians equally.Sometimes I feel he wants to, but he is under chaddis possession.Whats more unfortunate than one looks independent but invisibly tied by others.God bless our CM and PM

It is officially now Bangalore is called Bengaluru, like Mumbai, Britishers have gone never to return, stop this anglican names, be an Indian, we watched German TV Channels, Angela Merkel also addressed the City as Bengaluru & spoke few words in Kannada, and also said lots of Bengalurians were sponsored and sent to Germany from German owned companies like Miko & Seimens(in Bengaluru), and she is correct. Nothing wrong in Sleeping CM Siddu wearing Panche ( Panche in Kannada, Serong in English or Lungi in Tulu), he is in Karnataka (India), not in Germany, may be he should have taken his sunglasses (which is disrespect to foreign dignitaries), never mind, he is just there to represent Karnataka
Honorable PM Mr. Modi is doing a good job in getting foreign investment to India, Angela Merkel is the perfect example, how Mr. Modi effect works in India.
Saying that Mr. Modi should concentrate on Indian domestic problems than visiting abroad very frequently, he has pledged Indian voters, and he should fulfill his promises before his tern ends in 2019. So far we think his performance has been satisfactory (Average), but he is on right track.
We wish & pray for progressive India for younger generation.

First of all it's so humorous to hear RG. Can't but help smiling that he wants to take over and rule India without knowing anything..!
What's even more intriguing is that he has 'followers' and 'supporters' in this forum !! Willing to accept a 'dumb head' as their leader!!
    Hoooooooo Hooooooooooooooo!
Groom him first yaars and then support!

No big deal Flavian. Many world leaders do not know to speak in English.
Have you heard RG speak in Hindi?
Banana, Utana, Dabana, Chin-naa..and all that stuff?
I appreciate Soniaji's efforts though and how she speaks Italianish Hindi.
Knowing English is not that big a thing!!
Not knowing English and Wooing is something....
    am I right or wrong?
    All these English speaking girls...
    Whom do they 'fall for'...?

    *COPIED* PLS SHARE!

"Imagine Angela Merkel hiring a big Indian stadium, getting all the loud Germans in India and organizing a jingoistic PR circus during which she blames the German opposition parties and claims Germans are finally feeling proud now that she is at the helm, and sheds tears about meeting with Adani reminiscing about her mother scrubbing plates at the neighbour house.

Imagine Obama, Putin, Xi Jinping and other world leaders doing that. Well, none of them stooped so low.

BUT SADLY, this is what Modi has been doing since one and a half years"

" A week into the horrific incident in his backyard, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, usually so active on social media, has maintained a studied silence.
He has expressed his gratitude to American people for their hospitality during his recent trip to the US, greeted a cabinet colleague and a governor on their birthdays and the people of China on its National Day, offered his condolences on the death of a singer's son and congratulated a billiards champion on his prolific twitter feed but not a word on Mr Akhlaq."
