Udupi, Oct 7: Cracking down on buses using high decibel vacuum horns, the Udupi traffic police on Wednesday October 7 intercepted over 40 service as well as city buses at Court Road here and fined them.
In response to public complaint and on the directions of a judge of the Udupi court, SP Annamalai has initiated stern action against the use of vacuum horns instead of battery horns.
The traffic police conducted the operation at two spots - near Jodukatte and at Court Road. The cops stopped the buses which were using high decibel horns and removed them.
The buses found guilty of violation were fined Rs 100 each, and if they repeat the offense, they would be fined Rs 200 the next time.
The locals have complained that the stretch from Jodukatte to service bus stand is a busy area, and constant honking of high decibel horns creates much noise pollution and disturbance. The court, taluk office, a hospital and a school are located in the vicinity and honking is a major source of disturbance, they said. However, despite several such crackdowns, bus drivers continue to ignore rules and time and again use such horns.
The operation was held in the presence of Udupi traffic SI Rajgopal and ASI Prakash and two other personnel.
