Sullia, Oct 10: A couple living in Kanthamangala, Mandekolu in the taluk, was tied up in the early hours on Saturday October 10 and robbed of their possessions. Owner of the house, Ramachandra, operates an agro agency here.

A gang of five gained entry into the house by breaking open the rear door. On hearing sounds, Ramachandra woke up and came out of his bedroom to check. The robbers at once caught hold of him, stuck a plaster on his mouth and tied up his hands and legs. Ramachandra sustained injuries in the process.

At that moment, Ramachandra's wife Manjula too came out the bedroom and pleaded the robbers not to hurt her and her husband. She told them where the key to the cupboard was and take anything they wanted.

When maid Sunita who was in another room came out, the robbers brandished knives to threaten her and hit her on the head. They then tied up both Manjula and Sunita.

The robbers also snatched away the gold ornaments that Manjula was wearing. They also took away Ramachandra's mobile phone.

The robbers took away a Karimani, a pair of diamond earrings, 18 gold bangles, six gold finger rings, a rope chain and a gold pendent, altogether worth around Rs 8 lac. They also robbed silver worth Rs 15,000. The gang conversed in Kannada and Telugu, the couple informed.

After the robbers left with the loot, the maid freed herself and untied Manjula and Ramachandra also.

Ramachandra then called the police, who rushed to the spot and took all the three to hospital. While the couple returned home after first aid, Sunita was admitted to the hospital.

SP Sharanappa, ASP Vincent Shanthakumar, DySP Bhaskar Rai and others police personnel arrived at Ramachandra's house and investigated.

A case about the incident stands filed in the police station here.

Investigation relating to the robbery has since been extended to include Kasargod district. The police personnel here have conveyed information of this crime to Badiyadka, Adoor, Kumble, and Kasargod police stations in Kasargod district and solicited their help in solving this case. The policemen have already searched many areas and conducted vehicle checks by setting up barriers. They are keeping a close watch on the movements of people about whom they have suspicion. It is suspected that the robbers would have slipped into Kasargod district after the robbery.
