Riyadh, Oct 10 (IANS/WAM): A power plant, provided by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for Yemen's port city of Aden as part of humanitarian aid, is up and running to light up most the neighbourhoods destroyed by Houthi rebels.

A Yemeni official thanked the UAE for "bringing light back to the city which has long suffered from darkness inflicted by the obscurant."

In a statement, the official said that 52 megawatts from the 60-megawatt power plant provided by the Emirates Red Crescent have been used to serve most households in the city's damaged areas.

The cost of new power generators and the restoration of the grid in Aden stands at over AED217 million (about $59 million) all of which were provided by the UAE, he said.

Besides the power plant, the UAE also helped re-open the Al Jumhouriya Hospital, the largest in Aden province, the official said.

In addition, four schools, a kindergarten and a police station damaged by the Houthi rebels' were also restored, he added.

The Shia Houthi group seized half of Yemen since last year, including the capital Sanaa.
