Kasargod, Oct 13: In an incident which came to light with a delay of several hours at Bekoor village in the district, a student, who had ventured into a canal along with his classmates, drowned. The incident occurred on the evening of Monday October 12, but came to light at around midnight.

The boy who lost his life in this tragic incident has been identified as Ibrahim Niyaz (13), a native of Bekoor. He was a student of the government school at Bekoor.

Niyaz was accompanied by five of his classmates when the group went to take bath in the canal at Pratapnagar, Bekoor. During this time, Niyaz met watery grave. The other five boys, who were overwhelmed at this unexpected development, and out of fear, went away from the spot to their homes without revealing the happening to anyone.

The family members of Niyaz believed that the boy would have been in the house of anyone of his classmates. They turned apprehensive as the boy did not turn up even after late hours. They then visited the homes of Niyaz's close friends, and came to know that the boy was no more.

The boys were then led to the canal for identifying the spot, but searches conducted thereafter did not succeed in finding the mortal remains of the deceased. Thereafter, personnel of the fire brigade, who arrived from Uppala, conducted extensive searches and found the body from near Kukkar. The body was thereafter shifted to the mortuary of Mangalpady community health centre.
