Fake notes seized near Bangladesh border in Bengal


Kolkata, Oct 13 (IANS): The Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday seized fake Indian currency notes of the face value of nearly Rs. 13 lakh and arrested a man with nearly a kg of gold from near the Bangladesh border in West Bengal, an officer said.

In an operation under Sasani border outpost in Malda district, the troopers seized fake currency with the face value of Rs.12.92 lakh wrapped in a plastic bag and thrown from across the Bangladesh border.

"The fake notes in a plastic bag was thrown across the fence into the Indian side. A BSF team challenged some miscreants who tried to pick up the packet. But they fled taking advantage of foggy weather," said a BSF officer.

In another operation under the Petrapole Integrated Check Post, a BSF team apprehended a man who was carrying gold bars weighing 890 grams and valued at over Rs.24 lakh.

Identified as Sanovar Shahaji (52), the accused works as a coolie and has been handed over to police along with the seized metal.

The BSF so far in the year has seized FICN of the face value in excess of Rs.two crore and gold worth over Rs.5 crore. The troopers have also apprehended 17 gold smugglers.
