Mumbai: Drunk cop rams into senior citizen, bikes outside police station


Mumbai, Oct 22 (Mid-day): A senior citizen was injured when a Santro driven by a constable who was allegedly drunk, rammed into him at Tardeo late last night. An eyewitness insisted that both the constables in the car were drunk. It has been learnt that the driver of the Santro was off duty.

The accident happened just as they were leaving the compound of Tardeo police station. The driver also rammed into three parked bikes, a music system put up for navratri and drove over the foot of a person before coming to a halt.

Eyewitnesses account
An eyewitness said a mob gathered and dragged the driver out of the car, but he could barely stand and looked absolutely dazed under the influence of alcohol.

“Even the co-passenger reeked of alcohol,” the eyewitness said. Another eyewitness, whose foot was injured, added, “Following the incident, the policemen staying in the nearby police quarters rushed to the spot and assured the public that action will be taken against the accused, and requested people not to create a ruckus about the incident.”

The pedestrian who was not identified till the time of copy going to the press, was rushed to Nair hospital for treatment. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) S Jaykumar said, “The two policemen involved in the accident were from Tardeo police station. They hit a senior citizen as they were leaving the compound. Further investigation is on.”
