Mangaluru: Green Tribunal stays work on new DC office

Mangaluru, Oct 22: National Green Tribunal has issued stay order against undertaking works on the new office of the district deputy commissioner that has been planned to be built on forest department land at Padil in the city outskirts.

A decision to build the district deputy commissioner's office complex at the land belonging to Karnataka Forest Development Corporation at Padil had been taken after several rounds of meetings District in-charge and forest minister, B Ramanath Rai, had given his nod for this proposal. The state government had released Rs 41 crore for the purpose, and the responsibility to construct a five-storied building at the spot was given to Karnataka State Housing Board. The forest department had given its permission for the clearance of trees standing at the spot.

Environmentalists have been saying that this spot houses some of the rarest bio diversity, with 478 trees standing here. It has also been home to foxes, civet cats, peacocks, and iguana among others. Moreover, six breeds of frogs, which are considered very rare, have also been found here, they argue.

Even as the Housing Board geared up for the task by inviting tenders, Daniel Tauro and Suma Nayak had approached the High Court against the project, but their petitions were dismissed for various reasons. Suma Nayak then filed petition in National Green Tribunal, and secured stay order on September 30. Nayak said that the stay order will continue in operation till the deputy commissioner, who has been named as defendant, furnishes reply to the notice.

    It is a real shame that Forest Dept., which has a sacred duty and responsibility of protecting and nurturing our forests/bio-diversity, has permitted chopping off of forest cover containing 478 trees of varied species (some of which may be more than a hundred years old and of endangered varieties).

    A 'concrete jungle' just cannot be permitted to replace a natural jungle (forest), the former being an irreplaceable treasure in the modern era, in the light of mindless destruction of the environment/ecology. This treasure belongs to all the citizens of Mangaluru and all environment-conscious stakeholders have to get together and fight to protect it, in the interests of the present, as well as the future generation/s.

    A 'concrete jungle' can be put up in any barren land, certainly not at the cost of a 'Green Mangaluru'.

    I think this place in padil should be made unto a public park with a jogging track, children's play area, a butterfly park etc. It has almost 500 trees and plenty of birds bats etc etc. Students of zoology and botany from different colleges can use this place for their research n study on different species of plants and wildlife. DC office can be built on any other land where there are no trees. Let us all get together and support this plan to make it into a park for us Mangaloreans. We need to give a memorandum to the district administration and our MLAs and the Forest minister about this.

    On what basis has the forest minister given his consent for this building to come up on forest land?
    According to a report appearing in yesterday's Times of India, Karnataka has lost a major share of its forest cover and encroachments continue unabated with 81,776 hectares of forest land cover under encroachment, higher than Andhra Pradesh and Kerala put together. It is the duty of the forest minister to protect our forests and he has no authority to grant permission as per his whims and fancies. Even if he grants permission, he has to ensure that this loss of forests is compensated by planting trees elsewhere. I wonder what plans he has in place for this. Is he bothered about the loss of this forest cover?

    If you have money and political clout anything can be done, since this construction is for the Govt body this hulla gulla, Go to MOODBIDRI and check one of the mammoth institution built in FOREST LAND, given by forest departmnet on lease, it has become a concrete jungle."PAISA SAB KUCH KARDETHA HAI"
