Property worth $19 million seized from jailed mafia boss

Catania, Oct 24 (IANS/AKI): Police in Sicily impounded assets worth 18 million euros ($19 million) from jailed mafia don Ciro Fisicaro, who had continued to run his empire over the past two decades from prison, according to investigators.

Friday's operation in and around the port city of Catania led to seizure of transport firms, supermarkets and hypermarkets, 10 buildings including apartments, warehouses, offices and garages, 57 vehicles, bank accounts and other financial assets, police said.

Fiscaro, 52, was sentenced to life in prison for three murders committed in 1992 by the Nardo clan, of which he is the top boss.

While in prison, he conducted Nardo clan business through a Sicilian citrus fruit producer, Giuseppe Mauceri, registering clan assets in the businessman's name.

A court in Sicilia ordered asset seizures at the request of anti-mafia prosecutors in Catania.
