Udupi, Oct 25: St John the Evangelist Church, Pangala emerged as the overall Champion in the 12th edition of Konkani singing competitions organized by the ICYM unit of St John the Evangelist Church, Pangala on Sunday, October 25 at Church hall.
St Peter Church, Pethri came as first runner up and St Peter Church Barkur secured third place in the competition.
Fr Leslie D’Souza the parish priest of Shankerpura presided over the inaugural session and inaugurated the competitions by lighting the lamp.
Fr Leslie D'Souza in his inaugural speech said "When we organize an event for the public, we must also look into the benefit to the society. From the past 12 years, the youth at Shankerpura have been organizing these competitions for the development of Konkani language and cultures. They have created opportunities for the budding people to showcase their talents. Everyone wants to win. But let the best singer win and let it increase the competitive spirit in every individual."
YCS animator Fr Vincent Coelho, Fr Charles Noronha the parish Priest of Palimar, Sr Lily the superior of Shankerpura convent and Judges from Mangaluru, Ashith Pinto, Babitha Pinto and Richard Monteiro were present for the inaugural session.
Participants of different age group from 18 parishes of diocese of Udupi participated in this event.
The valedictory took place with Fr Edwin D’souza, Director, Youth commission, Diocese of Udupi as the chief guest along with Fr Francis Cornelio the parish priest of of Kalathur Fr Leslie D’Souza the parish priest of Shankerpura, Fr Charles Noronha the parish priest of Palimar, Ashith Pinto, Babitha Pinto, Richard Montiero, Derrick Mascarenhas, President, Indian Catholic Youth Movement, Diocese of Udupi, Mark Vaz Vice president, Shankerpura, Simi D’Souza, Secretary, Shankerpura, Clara Mendonca, Animator, ICYM, Shankerpura, Franklin Martis, President, Ria D’souza, Secretary, ICYM, Pangla unit were present on the dais.
Fr Francis Cornelio Congratulated the youth of Pangala for organizing the event and giving importance to the Konkani language. He asked everyone present to enrich the culture. He also asked the participants to take an active part in the Eucharistic celebrations in the choir.
Derrick Mascarenhas said "ICYM Pangala has put a lot of efforts in bringing up a beautiful programme. Konkani in its culture has songs that are sung right from the birth to a death. Thus Konkani is a part and parcel of Christianity in the coastal Karnataka.” He also asked the host parish to give importance to the traditional Konkani practices such as Gumta, Maand etc. to be brought to the stage in the future editions of competition.
Richard Monteiro on behalf of all the judges congratulated all participants and complimented them as all the songs were sung beautifully. He wished that many more teams from diocese of Udupi participate in the coming years.
Fr Edwin D’Souza, Fr Leslie, Fr Charles and Mark Vaz gave away the prizes to all the winners.
Anil D’Sa Introduced the judges and Fr Leslie gave away the mementos and felicitated them. Franklin Martis welcomed the gathering Ria D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks. Ashwini Dantis compeered the entire valedictory session.

Boys Solo : Marvel D’Souza, Udupi, Varun D’sa, Pangala, and Nelson D’Souza Kolalgiri secured first, second and third place respectively
Girls Solo : Vivina Lewis, Brahmavar, Reema Mathias, Kuntalnagar, Cleona Quadros Shirva secured first, second and third place respectively
Mixed Group: Pangala, Pethri and Barkur secured first, second and third place respectively

Men Solo : Praveen D’Souza, Pethri, Royston D’Souza, Kolalgiri, Manoj D’Souza, Shirva, secured first, second and third place respectively
Women Solo : Deeksha Lasrado, Kalmady, Ashmitha Dsouza, Pangla, Carol Danthi Pernal secured first, second and third place respectively
Duets: Melvyn Monteiro and Amrutha D’silva, Katpady, Nihal Dais and Ashmitha D’Souza, Pangala, Franklin Fernandes and Janice D’Souza Barkur secured first, second and third place respectively
Mixed Group : Pangala, Barkur, Moodubelle secured first, second and third place respectively.
