Mangaluru, Oct 27: A pregnant woman and her unborn baby died in a hospital in Vittal on the night of Monday October 26, following which, her family members alleged that the hospital and doctor's negligence had caused the sudden death.

Girija (26), wife of Ramesh (30) was admitted to the government hospital in Vittal on Monday morning for delivery of her second child. As she did not deliver even by night, the nurses asked her to walk around to stimulate labour, it is said.

She was then taken to labour ward for delivery just before 9 pm, and 15 minutes later, she was declared dead. The unborn baby also died.

Following her death, family members and locals gathered at Vittal hospital premises on Monday night and protested. Dr Vedavati, who treated Girija, refused to come out despite their demands, sources said. The family then filed a complaint in Vittal police station, based on which a case has been registered.

Family sources said that the cause of Girija's sudden death was not specified by her doctor or the hospital. They said that Girija was healthy and even when she was in delivery the doctors and nurses did not mention any problem with her health. They also alleged that negligence of the doctor had resulted in Girija's death.

Her body was brought to Wenlock hospital in the city on Tuesday October 27 for post-mortem.
