YCS/YSM memorandum on edu submitted to Sorake

Udupi, Oct 27: On behalf of the 1,000 student representatives of the Karnataka state YCS/YSM who met at Udupi on October 19, Fr Denis D'Sa, public relations officer of Udupi diocese and Dr Lawrence D'Souza, secretary, Catholic Education Society of Udupi diocese on Tuesday October 27 submitted a memorandum to the state government with a list of demands for student welfare and suggesting changes in the education system.

The memorandum was submitted to urban development minister and Udupi district incharge Vinay Kumar Sorake. The minister has assured to discuss the matter with the primary education minister Kimmane Ratnakar and attend to the requests made in the memorandum by the YCS students of Karnataka region during their regional convention held from October 18 to October 20 at St Mary School, Kannarpady, Udupi.


The memorandum states:

"1. We have experienced the load of the students’ books too heavy on account of which many a student experiences hardships. We request that the load of books be reduced by 50% and suitable instructions to the persons concerned may please be given for the purpose.

2. The corruption involved in the appointment of teachers and related issues may kindly be wiped out and good teachers may please be provided to us.

3. The competition in the educational system may be reduced, and cooperation and group activities may please be encouraged. We welcome the grading system in force at present through the CCE and the progressive measures.

4. The training for the teachers may please be completed before the academic year, proper directions given and confusion in this regard may please be avoided.

5. Uniform standards may please be maintained in the promotion in all the classes.

6. The educational system may please provide due opportunities for the students’ sports and games, entertainment, rest and creativity.

7. The Karnataka State syllabus may please be upgraded to the national level so that the students are prepared for the national level examinations.

8. The government may please see that no student in Karnataka is deprived of the fundamental facilities.

9. The teachers for drawing, craft and physical education may please be appointed without further delay. Qualified and competent counsellors may please be appointed for the students. A teacher for every group of 30 students may please be appointed and no teacher be transferred during the academic year in order to make their uninterrupted services available to all the students.

10.The syllabus and activities of the school may please be made complementary to the future lives of the students.

"We feel confident that our government and the educational authorities respect the rights of the children. We fondly hope that you will consider our appeal favourably and will involve us in forming the educational policies in order to form responsible citizens for our country in our educational institutions," states the memorandum.

    In fact it is the cry of all the students represented by 1000. My humble request to the authorities concerned to listen to the plea of these future pillars of the country so that we can see a glow on their faces and allow them to bloom to the full.

    The Honorable Cabinet Minister Mr. Vinaykumar Sorake should convince his colleagues in the cabinet to accept in principle, the rightful and humble requests of children of Karnataka and issue implementation orders before November 14th.

    dear all, it was a constantly, seriously discussed memorandum by students of Karnataka. i was a part of this procedure as a Regional director of YCS/YSM Karnataka. but i had no part in suggestion only it was from students. it was really shock to see student capable of coming out with tremendous suggestions. the memorandum approved by students elected members around 1500 from Karnataka. hope our government authorities will take seriously this memorandum and implement it.

    Great initiative by the YCS and YSM members of Karnataka region to change the current education system. I was a part of this youth convention and can proudly say that the points listed in the above memorandum were thoroughly discussed in the presence of qualified resource persons and only then the memorandum was drafted. So it is my humble request to the concerned authorities in the government to take a serious note of this memorandum, involve students and make the necessary changes.
