Karkala, Oct 28: In an accident which occurred at Nitte village in the taluk on the night of Tuesday October 27, the car driver lost his life, while two others who were travelling by the ill-fated car suffered injuries.

Akhil (25) from Nadimane Nitte, who was driving the car, died while Gangadhar Poojary (27) also from Nadimane Nitte, and Nithesh (25) from Daddodi near Nitte suffered extensive injuries. All the three were related to each other. Akhil was running a crusher unit at Nitte.

A tipper loaded with sand, which was moving towards Karkala from the direction of Nitte, was taking a turn to the left near Lamina Cross at Nitte, when the car which came from behind at high speed hit the truck. Due to the impact of the collision, the car got sandwiched between the tipper and the road. Locals put in efforts and succeeded in separating the two vehicles.

The car had turned into a mass of mangled steel in the process. Pieces of the car including its doors were found scattered all along the road at the accident spot. Oil from the car was found to have spilled for a long distance.

Some locals said that the tipper did not have any indicator or brake lights either in the front or back. They guessed that the driver did not know that the tipper was slowing down and taking a turn, as it did not have any light in the rear. They also attributed increasing number of accidents on the road to the recent widening of the road, and non-existence of street lights.

Akhil, who suffered severe head injuries, was taken to Manipal hospital, where he died. The other two were initially admitted into a private hospital in the town before shifting to a private hospital at Mangaluru. Reportedly, they are recovering.

In fact, those in the car were going to a private hospital in Karkala. Gangadhar Poojary had suffered fracture of the leg in an accident a few days back. On Tuesday night, he was being taken to a hsopital here when the car met with an accident. Fatefully, he was treated at the hospital which he wanted to visit, before being referred to private hospital in Mangaluru.

Karkala police have registered a case.
