Mangaluru, Oct 30: Over 45 office-bearers and members of the online taxi owners' and drivers' association on Friday October 30 locked the office of Ola online taxi service, located in Manasa Towers on MG Road, in protest against increase in rates by Ola.

The protestors said that as per an agreement for three years, Ola was supposed to pay Rs 32,000 for 3,000 km for mini taxis and Rs 8 for every kilometre exceeding 3,000 km, and Rs 36,000 for 3,000 km for sedan cars and Rs 9 per kilometre after that. However, Ola has now changed its rates and is taking Rs 49 for every 2 km from the customer per trip, and from this 15 percent has to be paid to Ola as commission, they said.

As the company has adopted a system of payment based on bookings, the taxi operators are incurring loss and facing hardships, they added.

General secretary of online taxi owners' and drivers' association Sadique Kannur speaking to daijiworld said, "The amount we get is not enough to pay even the EMI of vehicle loan.

"We have already submitted memorandum to the DC and raised the issue during RTO meetings. Suraj Karkera of Ola had agreed to hold meeting in Bengaluru and meet us today, hence we came to Ola office to discuss the issue with him. However, he was not in office and not reachable, so we locked up the office," he said.

Association members vice-president B K Imthiaz, Shakir Ansar, Devdas Suvarna and others were present.

    The 30-year-old spent most of his life bent over rolls of fabric in zari and hand embroidery shops in Mumbra and later, Byculla. “I learnt how to embroider when I was 12 or 13 years of age. I really wanted to continue my education, but my family could not afford it. I used to spend around 12 hours in the shop, but in spite of that, my salary was still only around Rs 11,000,“ he says. A job at the airport quickly followed, where he had to pick up and the cabin crew of a leading Indian airline. But work timings were harsh -he had to work seven days a week for a monthly salary of Rs 12,000. A friend working with Ola suggested that Shaikh give the job a shot. “When I joined in July last year, I managed to complete 16 to 17 trips in one day. Once, I even conducted business worth Rs 1,50,000. But now I have taken it a bit easy because I have settled down. But still, on an average, you can easily complete 10 trips per day,“ he explains. Shaikh started out by riding a rented car and quickly graduated to buying his own Wagon R. Seven months ago, he purchased his second car and hired a driver as well. “If he works hard, I am able to earn about Rs 20,000 in a single shift, which is 12 hours long,” he explains. “The company has several offers going on. According to the current offer, passengers are charged Rs 11 per kilometer. Ola takes 20 per cent of the money as commission and gives the rest to the driver,” he adds. Sheikh’s work timings now stretch from 6 am to 8 pm and takes up more trips if he is need of some extra cash. “Everything has changed. Before, buying milk for my one-year-old son was a challenge. Now I can even buy different flavours of Cerelac for him. I always regretted that I could never complete my education. But today, I can educate my son,” he smiles.

    Ola associates in Mumbai have written rags to riches stories if news reports are to be believed, some drivers even claim to earning up to 1 lac per month and are very happy, then why this fuss in Mangaluru????

    Somewhere Local administration & State Govt has failed to provide basic amenities. Shame to call the Palestine of India ( Mangaluru) a smart city aspirant. Lots of collages churning out graduates , attitude of people remained same for many decades.

    Dear MAngaloreans stop fighting among religion , Caste & Language. Don't just blame the ola for the sake of blaming someone. How many of us have condemned the attach on passenger who was chased couple of month back. Who will assure the safety of operators , driver & passenger? Blame with hundred of so called jobless people outside Airport & Railway station masquerading as cabbies.

    why police n authorities succumb to the blackmailing by taxi owners' & drivers' Ass. Are they not primarily responsible to the general public /consumers. Let them put the foot down and forcibly re-introduce KSRTC, private buses & Auto rickshaws right from airport terminal. There should be KSRTC /private buses from airport to Mangalore & Udipi Bus stand & Railway station, Kundapur and Bhatkal. Otherwise the authorities /police has to keep facing this sort of goondaism by the drivers' As... Will some concerned heed or for that also the consumers have to knock at courts. Shameful administration, whoever it applies to.

    The Air travelers demand public transportation (Buses) from Mangalore Airport to KSRTC bus depot and to Mangalore Railway Station. It is the responsibility of District Administration. Don't make the passengers scapegoats of taxi lobby's extortion. Passengers don't mind to pay what is reasonable, but hate to be extorted and make themselves fools. The passengers travel with lot of anxiety and tension and least thing they want to do is argue with the taxi extortionists.

    The District Administration should put their feet in passengers shoes.

    Give us a break. Give us the options.

    Taxi is a big problem in Mangalore .when I come to Mangalore airport to travel out from airport I have to spend minimum Rs 500 just to go out into city .Where as when I travel from Dubai to Mumbai I just spend Rs 50 to reach home I catch BEST bus from Airport to Andheri railway station and from there by train to home .So called prepaid taxi are looting people .Now these Ola are also following the same thing .Best Fleet taxis like Meru should be allowed to do business.There should be BUS to and from Airport

    Is Mangalore going Kerala way. They never allowed ola to operate. The passengers from airport were booed & harassed. Same is with Mangalore central. Hundreds of Auto & Taxis. They over charge or refuse to ply by meter. With these Fekus d " Ache din" is a dream"
