Mangalore: Mandd Sobhann Aims at World Record with 'Singathon'

Mangalore, Aug 7: ‘Mandd Sobhann,’  the premier Konkani cultural organization will organize ‘Konkani Nirantari,’ world's longest singing marathon by multiple singers in January 2008, said Eric Ozario, 'pirjent' (chief functionary0 of the organization at a press conference here on August 7.

Ozario said that the programme would incorporate 40 hours of non-stop singing marathon which would start at 6 am on January 26, 2008 and continue till 10 pm on January 27.

This is an attempt to earn a place for Konkani in the Guinness Book of Records records by beating the existing record standing in the name of ‘Communidade Evangelica Luterand Sao Paulo,’ Ulbra, Brazil, he added.

The marathon singing will involve 1,200 singers and will be held at Kalaangann in Shaktinagar in the city. This world record attempt is being undertaken to raise funds for the completion and sustenance of Kalangann, world's only Konkani heritage centre, said he.

Interested singers, who are 14 years and above can egister their names by contacting the Mandd Sobhann office (0824 2230489). It is not necessary that applicants should have any professional background or training.

It may be noted here that Mandd Sobhann had staged an Manddo festival in the city a few years ago, in which over 900 artistes had taken part on a single stage.

Other members of the executive committee Louis J Pinto, Stany Alvares, Jyoti Lasrado and Arun Raj Rodrigues were present at the press meet.
