Mangaluru: Jeppu Avengers lift Valencia Premier League cricket trophy

Mangaluru , Nov 1: Jeppu Avengers clinched the prestigious 'Valencia Premier League Championship-2015' trophy, defeating Angelore Avengers in the final match of the four-day Valencia Premier League (VPL), organized by the Youth Welfare Committee of St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia at the football ground, Nehru Maidan here Sunday November 1.

Addressing the gathering during the valedictory of the tournament, mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred congratulated the winning team and the lauded its players Sandeep and Arun for their effort in winning the match.

"The runner-up team need not lose heart, instead try hard to succeed next time," she added.

In his presidential address, Fr James D'Souza, parish priest of St Vincent Ferrer Church, said, "Valencia Premier League has become successful because of the efforts of Anil Lobo and many others. As many as 36 teams have participated in the tournament."

He also appreciated the winners and handed over the prize money of Rs 1,00,000 in the form of cheque, and the championship trophy to Jeppu Avengers.

Mayor Jacintha handed over a cheque of Rs 50,000 and the runner-up trophy to Angelore Avengers.

Dilhan from Jeppu Avengers won the 'Man of the Match' title, while Nehal from Angelore Avengers was adjudged the 'Best Batsman', Awin from Jeppu Avengers the 'Best Bowler', and Prajwal from Cascia Super Kings won 'VPL Player of the Tournament' title. They were awarded Rs 10,000 each.

Arun Raj Rodrigues, vice-president of Valencia parish council, Louis J Pinto, former vice-president of the parish council, Patrick D'Souza, organiser of VPL and others were present. Anil Lobo proposed the vote of thanks.
