Bengaluru, Nov 2: “Intolerance has contributed to the tension in the society. The children at a young age should be taught to respect other religions,” said chief minister Siddaramaiah on the occasion of 60th Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations at Kanteerava stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, November 1. Siddaramaiah was addressing thousands of school children in the event hosted by department of public instruction (DPI).

“Peace in the society is not the same like before. Intolerance is on the rise. We see lots of incidents where unfortunate events take place. If we want peace in the society, then the children should cultivate the habit of tolerance towards other religions. Every religion should be treated alike and respected. Love your religion. But at the same time have respect for other religions,” Siddaramaiah added.

“Secularism, scientific approach and rationalism should be cultivated from childhood. Then only the children become great assets of the country. The astrology published in the media increases superstitions in society. It demolishes the scientific approach and rationalism of a person. Hence practices like astrology should be contained,” Siddaramaiah continued.

Siddaramaiah also called upon the people to make their children study in Kannada in primary classes. “The choice of language in the higher and later stage of education is left to the individual’s choice. But learn Kannada in primary classes. I am aware that the quality of teaching and infrastructure in government schools is not very good. But we are making continuous efforts to improve the status. We need English and other languages, but not at the cost of Kannada. In tune with this, we have drafted the Kannada Language Learning Bill, 2015, which is awaiting the President’s approval.” Siddaramaiah said.

Siddaramaiah also announced that the government will provide a pair of sandals or shoes with a set of uniform for free to students in government schools in addition to the mid-day meals.
