Karkala: NRI builds top-notch sports stadium at Eliyal - To open on Jan 9

Media Release

Karkala, Nov 2: Eliyal, as the name suggests, means younger sister of Palli (elder sister). It is a small, beautiful neighbourhood linked to Ranganpalke town of Kowdoor village of Karkala taluk in the Udupi district of Karnataka. The people of Eliyal once upon a time had been predominantly engaged in agriculture work. However, the economic globalization has rendered the agricultural investment, an unsustainable occupation especially in the dry hilly areas of coastal Karnataka. Consequently, entrepreneurs here have opted for alternative investment opportunities such as education, health, sports, tourism etc.

Lawrence Saldanha, a non-resident entrepreneur hailing from this very neighborhood recognized the concern that the younger generation of this neighbourhood as also of surrounding villages is lacking adequate infrastructure for the development of its sports talents and conceived the thought of constructing a multi-sports stadium for the long term benefit of budding sportspersons of the region.

Thus, a full-fledged stadium in the name of 'Late Eliyal P M Saldanha Memorial Kowdoor Stadium' with a 400 meter track, spacious pavilion, seating galleries, accommodation and other related facilities has been constructed and is all set to be thrown open to the public on January 9, 2016 with a two-day inaugural sports event.

State government ministers and legislators, education officials, sports personalities and other dignitaries have been invited and are expected to witness the inauguration of this unprecedented kind of venture in the rural region.

A noble and wonderful gesture by a NRI gentlemen Lawrence Saldanha. This is the true spirit and farsightedness of an educated and civilized person like Mr. Saldana would do of their hard earned money. I must commend him for this gesture for having spent part of his earning to the betterment of his town, thus helping and providing the infrastructure to nurture the rural sport talent.May this initiative be a guiding force to many others and help the needy around Eliyal surroundings. May there be many more international level sportsperson come out from this place. Good luck and I wish you all the success in your endeavor.
