Mumbai : Police brutality caught on camera - Couple thrashed inside station

Mumbai, Nov 4 (Mid-day) : An FIR has been lodged against the constables of the Andheri Police station after a video went viral in which the men in uniform were seen abusing and beating a young couple.

Ghulam Maqbool Sheikh, an eyewitness to the brutality, said the woman was slapped repeatedly by the cops until she was bleeding.

“The couple was fighting outside the police station when a constable asked the girl if she was being harassed. She said it was a personal matter and did not want any interference by the cops, nevertheless they were taken inside the police station,” Sheikh told ANI.

The boy and the girl were made to sit separately and after a while she got scared and started creating a commotion, which is when the cops started slapping her.

“She asked her friend to help her and when he came forward the police did not spare him as well and beat him up badly. The woman kept screaming for mercy but to no avail,” the eyewitness added.

Sheikh, who works for an NGO, filmed the entire incident on camera and demanded action against the cops.

“We are going to file an FIR against the cops involved in the attack on my clients at the Andheri Police station at 12:30 am on November 2nd. The couple was thrashed by the cops, including the woman constable, and was also illegally detained in the lock-up. They were also taken to the hospital for an illegal medical examination and we have the certificate as proof,” Nitin Satpute, the lawyer of the complainant told ANI.

Satpute asserted that the video was used as leverage against the cops, who had vehemently refused to file the FIR saying it would lower the image of the Mumbai Police.

This is the second instance in a month where the Mumbai cops have come under the scanner for their brutality.
Earlier, two Muslim youth were allegedly told to go to Pakistan by a police constable inside the Bandra police station before being brutally assaulted in custody.

This issue has become national sensation. Thank God, someone had the presence of mind to record the brutality and bring it out to the public notice. Such brutality is otherwise a routine inside police stations by the Shiv Sena/MNS inspired khakis. A typical case of fence eating the farm and to blame BJP in the bargain.

don't you all think it's a trap. or else why all these things are built, recorded and with in no time video is with media. It may not be so simple as narrated. Just being outside the station , I don't this is the reason for getting them inside the station. Either some other problem like they must be drunk or they must have spoken nasty with the police people. Any ways, I feel now it's like any where anything happens there is a pre planned recording mobile there and media to support and debate hitting ever incident on central govt or Modi.

Our police are good for nothing. Either they support moral policing goons or they themselves are goons. The other thing I have say is that we as people behave in a uncivilised manner. It's in our stupid culture. We think beating up someone solves the problems. What police have done here is what our culture has taught us.

Who will give the lead? Are you ready?
Police action also depends on certain degree of interaction between the police & the (supposedly) victim. Civilians/common man cannot take law in their hands. There are different areas to deal with certain incidents.
Have any time seen public got united and thrashed moral police for their immoral acts in the society in Mangalore?

Guys, Let us not politicize this matter. Yes police misbehave lot with people. especially at night. Bcz they drink a lot in night duty. And they have no right to beat a couple irrespective of religion/age/locality. PC should be behind the bars for his cruel behavior against couple. But instead of understanding the important things, we are just talking about cow, dog, cat, snake, BJP, congress, hindu, muslim, Christian,MODI, Rahul, india, Pakistan, etc. It shows that we are not united to fight against evil. Why we should comment this way. How BJP/CONGRESS or COW/PIG came in between.

This is the real harassment by Police. The public should take them into their custody and beat them like dogs by covering their face. This type tortures by police happens for every minute in India. I really pity for this couples who sat in front of police station at midnight thinking that very secured which has gone wrong.

“The couple was fighting outside the police station when a constable asked the girl if she was being harassed. She said it was a personal matter and did not want any interference by the cops"
Then why did they went to the police station? Instead of settling one problem they invited more problems.
Whatsoever, police brutality seems to be beyond human civilization! Now we have to wait for counter claim by the police.
So many police personnel to deal with lone woman. May be they did not get chance to charge someone for long. Wow!

It is a matter of great regret that Police who should protect the interests of the people indulge in atrocities.

The general concept is that a policeman is a friend of the people - PROTECTING THEIR RIGHTS AND HELPING THEM IF NEED ARISES.

Hope proper investigations will be cone. and the erring policemen duly pulled up and punished as per law.

Why not ? As a PM not only does he have a right but he also has a duty to show concern for 'all citizens' of the country. A heartfelt statement from the PM of the country is always highly desirable when such things occur. It helps in reassuring the public at large that our government genuinely cares for all it's citizens and ensure the concerned administration takes corrective action.

Police brutality is not only in Mumbai but all over the country and even in all parts of the world. What is worse is that the authorities instead of taking action against the erring cops cover for them giving the excuse of protecting the image of the Police which emboldens them to do this again and again.
There are only 3 groups of people who police are fearful of in India. They are :
    Senior journalists/media persons
    Senior lawyers
    Senior politicians
