Objection to Tipu Jayanti celebration a conspiracy by RSS: CM Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Nov 7 (PTI): Defending his government's decision celebrate the birth anniversary of the 18th century legendary king Tipu Sultan, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today termed opposition to it as a "conspiracy" by RSS and other communal forces to disturb harmony in society.

Several organisations and individuals have opposed the state government's move to celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanti on November 10, with a few threatening to disrupt the first- ever such government celebration.

"The opposition (to Tipu Jayanti) is an attempt by communal forces; ...Tipu Sultan was secular, he fought against British in three wars, in a sense our freedom struggle began with Mysore wars- between English and Tipu," Siddaramaiah said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, "He (Tipu) being called a fanatic or claims that he converted Hindus is baseless. He didn't do any such thing, instead he contributed to Sringeri Mutt, Nanjanagudu and Ranganatha Swami Temples. Only a secular person can do it. So, government has decided to celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanti."

Tipu was a ruler of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysore, who was considered an implacable enemy of the British East India Company. He was killed in May 1799 while defending his fort of Srirangapatna against the British forces.

Stating that Opposition is raising such issues without having any other issue to confront the government, Siddaramaiah said, "Tipu Sultan Jayanti should have been celebrated by government long ago, it has got delayed. This is a conspiracy by RSS and other communal forces. It is an attempt to disturb harmony in society."

Calling Tipu as "the most intolerant ruler," RSS had yesterday said it would lend its support to protests against event.

"Majority of the people are opposed to it - Tipu was the ruler of Mysore - it's okay, but at the same time he was the most intolerant king. It has been recorded by history, not by RSS. On his sword it is clearly mentioned, it is meant to kill kafirs," Kshetreeya Sanghachalak of RSS for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, V Nagaraj had said.

Veteran Kannada writer, researcher and historian M Chidananda Murthy said government's move to celebrate Tippu Jayanti has to be condemned.

Murthy had earlier opposed the proposal to name a university in Srirangapatna after Tipu Sultan, calling him "anti-Hindu, anti-Kannada".

    Dear readers,

Lot of comments regarding celebration of Tippu Jayanti.

Those who want to celebrate, let them celebrate it after all it’s only a day. It’s like today we fight and tomorrow we forget. This is all a conspiracy to create conflict between Hindus, Christian and Muslims. What you all think that CM Siddaramaiah doesn’t know what Tippu had done? He know everything.

Remember “United we stand, Divide we fall”

British used this policy. They divided the Hindu and the Muslims so that it will be easy for them to implement rules. Same way our politicians also try to divide. Do whatever you want to do and eat whatever you want to eat. I don’t support any political party… I believe everyone who comes to power are the same.

Think who will benefit out of these issues? If there is conflict between people, we need extra man power to control… for that you need extra money and how do government try to get money i.e. by tax. Follow the money, if we do good we have to pay tax and if we do bad we have to pay fine. Who benefits? The Government correct?

I am a Christian… married a Hindu and I have Muslim friends too… I am not commenting in favor of any cast, community or religion.

R.I.P Tippu Sultan - lets forgive him for whatever he has done.

    Thanks.

But we must speak from heart, speak against injustice done!
Did Lord Jesus Christ, while on this earth not spoke against people doing wrong?

Terrorist Tipu Sultan was Barbarian, Cruel and Brutal Ruler, Murderer of Millions of South Indian Hindus, christian's and other community people. Most of his life as Sultan of Mysore was spent in Kerala, waging wars of territorial annexation and Islamic conversions.
It was Tipu Sultan and his fanatic Muslim army who converted thousands of Hindus and christian's to Islam all along the invasion route and occupied areas in North Kerala, Coorg, Mangalore, and other parts of Karnataka. Besides over 8,000 Hindu temples were desecrated and/or destroyed by his army. Even today, one can see large concentrations of Muslims and ruins of hundreds of destroyed temples in North Kerala as standing evidence of the brutalities committed by Tipu Sultan … He was, all through, waging a cruel war against the Hindu population of Kerala, with a large Muslim army and ably assisted by the French with powerful field guns and European troops. In spite of all this, historical documents and records are being suppressed, distorted, and falsified in order to project this fanatic terrorist Tipu Sultan of Mysore as a national hero. Shame shame shame

Yes he got French weapons,Even Pak, ISIS has European, Chinese weapons.
But European troops were never took part in his his army, they always played their role independently.
Had it been so, French siding Tipu would have fought with British! Get your facts and logic right my dear.

I could read a lot of comments opposing the decision to introduce Tippu Jayanthi. Yes, not a personality to go for this extreme step of declaring a Jayanthi as we have for our father of nation. But no wonder , with this Congress Govt which just survives with the Muslim vote bank, anything may happen. We may get to see "Akbar Jayanthi", "shahjahan Jayanthi", "Humayun Jayanthi"...etc etc. Shameless politics, politicians go to any extreme.... very sad to see ourselves in this helpless condition...

He sided with French against British.

Tipu sultan was solely responsible for the destruction of hundreds of temples and churches throughout the coastal belt, right from karwar to cochin. He forcibly converted people to Islam, and the ones who objected were slaughtered to death and their wives and daughters given to his loyals as sex slaves.

I strongly recommend that every trace of Tipu's history be erased from the history of Mankind.

It's very sad that politicians these days don't have enough time to read history properly. Tippu was no way secular, instead wanted to establish Islamic state. He donated to temples or spared some churches from destruction only for his personal reasons. True he wanted to defeat British but with the support of French !!! He can't be called freedom fighter as there was no concept of Indian Independence at that time. Further he was the son of Hyder Ali who cunningly got power sidelining Wodeyars. After beef and Tippu remark, I really pity for this CM !!!

Indian Muslims are not at all descendants of Iran. They are part of us and should not fall into this conspiracy of a few upper castes. Instead pray worship the Almighty.

History is unkind to Tipu Sultan. The fact is that Tipu cannot be reduced to a singular narrative or tradition of intolerance or bigotry as he represented multiple traditions. He combined tolerant inter-religious traditions, liberal and secular traditions, anti-colonialism and internationalism. He could do this as he had strong roots in Sufism, which is not explored much by historians. He belonged to the Chisti/Bande Nawaz tradition of Sufism.

In fact, Tipu was radical in more than one sense. He was the first to ban consumption of alcohol in the entire State, not on religious grounds, but on moral and health grounds. He went to the extent of saying: “A total prohibition is very near to my heart.” He is credited with introducing missile or rocket technology in war. He was the first to introduce sericulture to the then Mysore state. He was the first to confiscate the property of upper castes, including Mutts, and distribute it among the Shudras. He is also credited with sowing the seeds of capitalist development at a time when the country was completely feudal. He thought about constructing a dam across the Cauvery in the present-day location of Krishnaraja Sagar. He completed the task of establishing a biodiversity garden named Lal Bagh.

His tolerance is reflected in his annual grants to no less than 156 temples, which included land deeds and jewellery. His army was largely composed of Shudras. When the famed Sringeri Mutt, established by Shankaracharya, was invaded by the Maratha army, he issued a firman to provide financial assistance for reinstallation of the holy idol and restoring the tradition of worship at the Mutt. His donation to the famous Srikanteshwara temple at Nanjangud the donation of 10,000 gold coins to complete temple work at Kanchi settling the disputes between two sects of priests at the Melkote temple and gifts to Lakshmikanta temple at Kalale are all well-known. Interestingly, Srirangapatna, a temple town, remained his permanent capital

Biggest butcher ever, real holocaust of Christians in the history of India!
He destroyed Christians like Hitler destroyed Jews!
If Sanghis are to be called promoting intolerance, Tipu was 1000 times more intolerant than them.
Sanghis intolerance is nothing in comparison to Tipu. We have right to oppose their policies, we can very well co-exist with difference!

I have never ever said Hindu's are intolerant.
We lived together for generations with or without difference. Sometimes with agreements in many things as well.
Political or ideological difference in some points, with some, sometimes is a different matter.
It's bound to be there, we have to live with that. There can never be perfect harmony in this world at all times.
Biggest cruelty was destruction of humanity, just for difference in faith and on doubts.

Tipu’s intolerance is history. Today's intolerance is being promoted by some communal organisations for which we can't entirely blame the Govt. The Govt. should sever ties with such forces and stop patronising them. Still I believe there is greater tolerance in India compared to our neighbouring countries. In India at least one is free to talk about issues like secularism and intolerance whereas in countries like Pakistan one will be easily charged with blasphemy if ever he dares to utter the word “intolerance.”
