Puttur, Nov 9: Police personnel attached to Uppinangady station took into custody the driver as well as the truck he was driving, for causing accident at Uppinangady bypass road. The truck had crushed Annu (52) from Perne village to death, when he was sitting by the roadside on the night of Saturday November 7.

The truck in question bears registration number of Andhra Pradesh. It was empty, as it was returning to Bengaluru after offloading goods at Mangaluru. Annu reportedly was sitting by the roadside. The driver, who was heavily drunk, never realized that he had crushed a person to death, because of intoxication.

The driver had parked his vehicle by the roadside after covering some distance from the accident scene, and slept. The Uppinangady police on patrol duty got suspicious after looking at blood stains on the tyres of the parked truck. They therefore took into custody the truck driver, identified as Virupaksha from Hanumanahalli in Gangavathi taluk, Koppal district and seized the truck.

Annu was later found to have died on the spot after coming under the wheels of the above truck. No one knows why he was sitting by the roadside at this unearthly hour. Local traffic police have registered a case and taken up investigation.
