Bengaluru: Tipu would have enjoyed status of Shivaji if he was a Hindu: Karnad

Bengaluru, Nov 10 (PTI): Jnanpith awardee Girish Karnad today said 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan would have enjoyed the same status as of Maratha king Chhatrapathi Shivaji, if he was a Hindu and not a Muslim.

In another remark that stoked a controversy, Karnad said it would have been "apt" had the Bengaluru International Airport at Devanahalli near here been named after Tipu Sultan rather than Kempegowda, a feudatory ruler under the erstwhile Vijayanagara Empire which founded Bengaluru in 1537.

The remarks by the noted Kannada playwright and actor came at a state government organised function to mark the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan held amid tight security at the state Secretariat in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The statewide celebrations are being boycotted by BJP and protested by several outfits who see the ruler of the erstwhile Mysore kindgom as a "religious bigot" and "anti-Kannadiga." The protests led to violence at Madikeri in Kodagu district claiming one life.

"I feel that if Tipu Sultan was a Hindu and not Muslim he would have attained the position in Karnataka that Shivaji Maharaj enjoys in Maharashtra," Karnad said.

Maintaining that Tipu is deprived of such a status owing to his religious persuasion, he said, "Because what has happened is today our scholars and politicians look at one's religion and caste first...."

"Injustice has happened to Tipu Sultan because of this type of evaluation..." he added.

Taking potshots at those calling Tipu Sultan "anti- Kannada and anti-Hindu", Karnad said, "Today, when we are celebrating this day as Deepawali and Tipu Sultan day, we can also celebrate it as Bihar day."

His Bihar day remark was an apparent jibe at BJP, which was routed in the Assembly polls. Karnad has always made known his ideological opposition to BJP.

Expressing similar opinion to that of Karnad while recounting the contributions of Tipu Sultan to the people of his kingdom, Siddaramaiah said "...If he was born as Hindu he would have got similar respect in Karnataka and the entire country, that Shivaji enjoys."

Siddaramaiah said, "We should not look at a person through his religion or caste perspective, but keeping in mind the good work done by him to the people. That is what we have done today by celebrating Tipu jayanti."

Karnad also said it would have been "apt" to name Bengaluru International Airport at Devanahalli after Tipu Sultan instead of Kempegowda as the latter was not a freedom fighter.

He noted that naming airport after Tipu Sultan would be more appropriate as Devanahalli was his birth place.

"I'm aware what I'm saying now will be debated....As we know Kolkata airport is named after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Mumbai airport is named after Shivaji Maharaj, but in Karnataka we have named it after Kempegowda," Karnad said.

"It is true that Kempegowda was great, he founded Bangaluru, but he was not a freedom fighter, so naming Bengaluru airport after Tipu Sultan would have been apt."

Karnad's remarks on Kempegowda international airport came in for attack from the BJP which said he had insulted the founder of Bengaluru on an issue which was a "closed chapter."

"Karnad is reopening a closed chapter and creating a new controversy....He has made name through controversies. His remarks are unfortunate and condemnable," state's senior BJP leader R Ashoka told reporters here. He also questioned the silence of the Chief Minister when Karnad made the remark.

Tipu was a ruler of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysore, who was considered an implacable enemy of the British East India Company. He was killed in May 1799 while defending his fort of Srirangapatna against the British forces.

Speaking at the event Siddaramaiah also said there is no "political interest" behind organising Tipu Jayanti.

Calling those opposing the event as "fanatics" and "communal forces", he said, "Until these communal forces exist such oppositions and controversies are common."

Siddaramaiah said politicising an event organised to pay respect to Tipu Sultan is "not correct".

"Whichever religion or caste that he may belong to, he has fought for the nation and has laid down his life for the people, so it is our duty to show respect," he added.

Several literary personalities and historians like Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Ko Channabasappa, Prof Shaik Ali, N V Narasimaiah who spoke at the event took exception to Tippu being labelled as anti-Hindu and anti-Kannada.

Recounting his contributions to promote communal and linguistic tolerance in his kingdom, they called him "truly secular."

In Delhi, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi made it clear that the ruling dispensation in Karnataka is not going to be "cowed down by such a lunatic fringe."

"Tipu Sultan was a great ruler in many respects. Like all 'Rulers', he had his failings and shortcomings - no doubt about it," he said, adding that the "lunatic fring of the Right" fail to understand the syncretic culture of India.

He said these attempts to rewrite history, this attempt to change history and this attempt to be selective about history, is condemnable.

Shivaji is held in high esteem by the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra since they consider him as their role model and patron. A striking similarity between him and Tipu is both were brave warriors in their respective kingdoms. While Tipu fought against the British, Shivaji fought against the Mughals. Both fought against their enemies to protect their respective kingdoms from foreign invaders and for their own survival. While there are controversies regarding Tipu especially his religious persecution and killing of Non-Muslims, Shivaji’s history had remained non-controversial. Moreover he is being praised for fighting against the fanatical emperor Aurangzeb.

Tipu Sultan is not a freedom fighter. Who is “ a Freedom Fighter”? A person who takes part in a revolutionary struggle to achieve a political goal, especially in order to overthrow their government. In Tipu’s case, British did not invade Mysore at that time but, they were trying to. So, Tipu is patriotic for his kingdom. He fought against British to safe guard his kingdom and his people.

He did not fight for INDIA. The concept of INDIA was not there as there were as many as 565 princely states. For each other they were different Nations altogether. There were wars and killings among those kingdoms for power and capture.

Region of Mysore / Kannada land ruled by various dynasties. Many had to face wars or wage wars for different reasons. We do not consider any of them to be bad rulers. But, only the credit goes to Tipu Sultan is, he is the first King who fought against British the Invaders who captured whole of Indian sub continent and dominated us for centuries.

Different opinions about any historical person is very common. Some may like him some don’t. Some may agree with him some may not. There and hundreds of controversial persons in the history. For instant Nathuram Godse, some say he is a traitor some say he is a hero.

Congress if trying to appease Muslims for “Vote bank politics”? what they will acheive with mere 14% of votes. Instead appease all the population if they need votes.

Please don’t kill people in the name of those who already DIED.

Now, some may agree and some may disagree with my above comments.

Why don't govt celebrate her jayanthi. what about Kittur Rani Chennamma. They are not deserved Jayanti.
Why govt forgot these warrior queens because they are woman's or they Hindu's.
If this is not the case then govt has to tell who is "fanatics" and "communal forces"

Vinasha Kalakke Vipareetha Buddhi - this is what the Congress is heading to.
    1. Ruling party is using tax payers money in putting advertisement in newspapers on Tippu. Can this wasteful expenditure incur PIL ( does the PIL have merit)?

2.Perform of perish - Siddhu. The Congress has severe deficit in intelligence in understanding the voters.

    3. Girish Karnad: people who read newspapers also have some school education and therefore have learnt the history of Tippu. Do we need this wasteful expenditure. Why compare with Shivaji - are you in politics?

    4. Religious leaders ( men) want the lime light and therefore it is not Tippu they want to celebrate but themselves.

    5. Politicians of the least class - time and again create divisive politics to sway people away from their lack of performance and to polarize votes.

Why? People who support Modi say, he stood for Hindu's, there was development, justice, post-godhra riots all lived in harmony. The aggrived party never going to accept. It is same case with Tipu's case, the aggrived never going to accept.

History is already there, text-books already narrate the tale. So, the credit is already given where required and so is the dis-credit.

Tomorrow somebody will tell about Ashoka Jayanti. Aurangazeb, Akbar. People of India would have forgotten their names if these Kings were not mentioned in History books. So why to give importance to Kings. Shivaji fought for Particular community. Not for India. Its just foolishness to support Kings.

We can see their activities like a CM of a state raking up Beef issue, now Tipu Jayanti, now changing airport name to Tipu bla...bla..
Where were these people all these years to celebrate Tipu Jayanti? Was he born on 10th November 2015?

Only upper cast landlords who barred lower cast women to wear the cloth to cover their upper part and some traitors who colluded with British against Tippu have the problem with rule of Tippu. Majority of people were happy under his rule.
He is the one, who gave annual grant to 156 temples.
He is the one, who built first church in Mysore.
The man who planned and started construction of KRS Dam.
The man who made Karnataka number 1 in silk industry.
The man who ended Paligari system by announcing that the land belongs to farmer who cultivates and not the Paligars.
The first man who established animal husbandry and cattle farm by name Amrit Mahal in which they raised hybrid cattle.
The man called by late Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam as innovator of the world’s first war rocket.
The man who British National Army Museum listed along with Napoleon Bonaparte as enemy commanders-Britain’s greatest foes.
The man who protected Sharada Peeta Holy Sringeri Mutt against Maratha invaders
Letters of conversation still present under the custody of Sringeri Mutt tells how much he respected Hindu Jagadgurus and you can find more details on Sringeri mutt official website under Jagadgurus Sri Sacchidananda Bharati III(1770-1814).
A line from one of letter expressing his grief at the news of raid by Maratha invaders goes by “People who have sinned against such a holy place are sure to suffer consequences of their misdeed at no distant date in this Kali age in accordance with the verse “Hasadbhih kriyate karma ruladbhir-anubhuyate”(People do evil deeds smiling but suffer the consequences crying” which is enough to prove how much he respected other religion and how secular he was.
It is obvious upper cast landlords,Paligaris and British hated him and maligned his history and now their offspring RSS carrying the same propaganda.

Jaffar ullal, you have written very good observations regarding Fanatic Tippu but failed to explain what he done to our forefathers on Ash Wednesday. Either intentionally you are hiding the fact or don't know any knowledge of History. As simple as, how did he obtained the Throne of Mysore Kingdom? Is it come from his forefathers or father? Why did British returned the Throne to present Mysore King. Only because you are a Muslim, don't glorify the tyrant, fanatic & murderer. If he was a true nationalists he wouldn't invaded nabouring Hindu rulers like Malabar. His intention was Islamisation. Corrupt congis are doing all this not for Out of Love of tippu but Love of the Chair.

So far for me Tipu Sultan was just a king but he laid his life for fighting with British. The person who gave his own children as hostage to protect his country but when all this controversy started i kept reading about Tipu every passage of time my respect to Tipu kept increasing.I was really surprised by learning that Tipu Sultan was the founder of Jacobin club of Mysore, the first revolutionary republican organization in India and he planted republican tree and called himself as Citizen Tipu instead of king Tipu.I think everyone have to read and understand more about him before commenting anything against him.He really looks different from any other ruler of that time. His land reform,Giving land ownership to Dalit, providing cloth to lower cast women in Kerala who were barred by upper cast Kingdom to wear cloth on upper part of the body says many thing like he is more than a king.

Hello to all Citizens of India,
Keep religion as private and personal. See the service rendered to the nation and the people by any individual and not his or her religion and caste . Has Tipu Sultan not fought for our freedom Independence of the nation? Has he not sacrificed his life and died. I don't consider him to be a saint. But he is truly a freedom fighter... give respects and acknowledge his services. Girish Karnad is 100% right in what he has publicly stated... we are one humanity ...one human family (Vasudeva Kutumbakam)...religion without love and brotherhood will bring doom to our nation... sometimes I wish there was no religion.....but true understanding and practice of any religion will surely bring peace , happiness and prosperity....but do we see that in our present time....

With due respect to all community, please understand why would someone organize a jayanthi when someones birthday do not fall on the day of this Jayanthi? Why would then prefer on a festival day (deepavali). I am just curious and wonder is not this the congress way of divide and rule among community, cast etc as a tradition since 1947. On the other side, Tipu is definitely a freedom fighter to safe guard his own kingdom but before the European came into attack his kingdom in India was he a freedom fighter if so for his own wasted interest by killing and converting the Indians?? Well Karnad reflects the success greed which he couldn't and his inferiority complex (cast system) so no reason he could take advantage of such situation. I guess to over come this Karnad should have been just accepted Christianity or any other religion so that he should have been better placed mentally as he seems to be undergone enough with the sick cast system.

Celebrating Tippus jayanthi was foolish move by the govt...As the one who have researched Tippus history...He has two different sides...First part of time he was tyrant ruler who silenced his enemy who parted with british in violent manner(remember all kings are violent)....He used violent forces against who rebelled for that he misused his religion and attacked places of worship of other religion...Second part is different story he started to consult hindu astrologers(clearly prohibited in Quran)...donate golds coins across many south Indian temples...He had even had finger ring named "Ram" in it...Those who criticise it consider his first part...Those who consider him as good ruler consider his second part...and also the contribution to the old mysore area...He had friendly relation with kannada speaking populace ...He was antibritish but not a freedom fighter ...Even shivaji or other rulers cant be considered as freedom fighter all these people fight for their kingdom....
I think it is foolish move by the govt...This type of thing doesnt appease common muslims...We dont need any appeasement...Just we need education and allieviation from poverty...Stop venerating any kings let past be past ...dont follow footsteps of sanghis by digging up past
