Ballari, Nov 13: In an incident which occurred at Swamihalli in Sandur taluk of the district on the night of Wednesday November 11, a six-year-old girl was raped and killed by smothering her.

Manasa (6), daughter of Basavanagouda and Vani from Swamihalli had gone suddenly missing when she was playing in front of her home on Wednesday evening. The parents had searched for her thereafter, but their efforts had failed to yield any result. On Thursday morning, her lifeless body was found to have been tossed in the backyard of her house.

During postmortem, the doctors found that the child was raped and then smothered to death. A case was thereafter registered in the local police station.

At the same time, a 66-year-old person from Kanavi village in Gadag district was beaten up by the locals after he tried to rape a five-year-old girl from the village. Hanumappa alias Hanumantappa Huligeppa Bandivaddara, a former member of Harti gram panchayat, who is the accused in the case, was then handed over to the police. The people said that the man visited the house of the girl when she was alone, and tried to rape her after offering some sweets. When the girl shouted for help, neighbours arrived at the spot, assaulted the offender, and then called the police.
