Mangaluru: Rs 5 lac compensation for Harish's kin; don't pay heed to rumours: Ramanath Rai

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (JS)

Mangaluru, Nov 13: As Dakshina Kannada came to a halt in the wake of the call for the bandh by VHP and Bajrang Dal, district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai on Friday November 13 urged the people of the district not to pay any attention to rumours and to maintain peace and harmony. He also announced that the state government would give Rs 5 lac to the family of Harish, who was stabbed to death near BC Road on Thursday November 12. The bandh had been called to protest the murder of Harish and the recent violence in Madikeri on Tipu Jayanti.

Addressing a press meet at the Circuit House here, Rai said, "A group of miscreants stabbed an innocent youth to death near BC Road on Thursday night. Harish (28), a resident of Navoor and his friend Samiualla had been to a shop near BC Road to have tender coconut. A gang that arrived in an Omni stabbed Harish to death. Samiulla, who reportedly tried to rescue his friend, also sustained two stab injuries and is recovering in a hospital.

"This is very sad incident and as district in-charge minister, I condemn this act by the communal forces. Harish was not associated with any outfit. I urge the people of this district not to give heed to rumours and maintain peace and harmony in the district," he appealed.

"I visited Harish's home and expressed condolences to his family. His father is suffering from cancer and Harish was the only breadwinner of his family. The state government has already announced 5 lac compensation to his family. Funds will also be raised by the district Congress unit to help Harish's family," he said.

"On Thursday evening, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) activists held a meeting in front of the Bantwal taluk office to register their protest against the recent turn of events at Madikeri in the last few days. While submitting a memorandum to an official concerned, it is alleged that a few people shouted slogans, which resulted in stone pelting by the Bajrang Dal activists. Both (SDPI and Bajrang Dal) are communal organisations. All my life I have been fighting against these communal forces, they should not be entertained. I am opposed to all communal outfits, whether from the majority community or from the minority," he said, adding, "The same evening, Harish and Samiulla were stabbed. A police team has been formed to trace the culprits and strict action will be taken against those involved in this," Rai said.

Asked whether the state government was not responsible for announcing the celebration of Tipu Jayanti despite strong opposition, he said, "There can be opposition or supporrt but when books were released on Tipu, no one protested. Protesting this way and causing harm to life and property is not right."

He also announced that 'Makkala Habba' which was to be held on November 14 has been postponed in view of the prohibitory orders for three days in the district. Additional police force has been bought to the district and law and order situation is under control, he added.

Rai and other Congress leaders also visited Samiulla, who was also stabbed while trying to rescue his friend Harish, in the hospital.

MLC Ivan D'Souza, MUDA chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, Mithun Rai, Praveenchandra Alva and others were present.

It was government's decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanthi and no body asked for it. If any body not interested they could have kept quiet and kept distance for that jayanthi. Resorting to all types of troubles and mischief monging exposed their real intention. Moreover it is time to think to ban all types of mischief monger outfits.

It is indeed a matter of great regret that a young man has been murdered on a mistaken identity. In any case no one has a right to take law into hands and kill people.

It is indeed very good of The District Minister in charge Mr. Ramnath Rai to take personal interest and meet and console the relatives of the the victim.

Hope the compensation of Rs.5,00,000/- will go some way to meet the expenses of the ailing father and the family. There is also an assurance from Mr. Rai that further funds may be made available.

It is good to see that The Minister - in charge taking very personal interest in situations like these.

Hindus only killed a Hindu thinking that he is a Muslim !
Anyway why only Billavas should die for the sake of Sangh Parivar while upper caste Hindus are enjoying the fruits of communal politics played by Sanghi groups ?
It is high time the Billava community elders ponder over this question and show proper path to their misguided younger generation.

From circumstances, modus operandi and the talks in the locality, it looks pretty certain that Harish was mistaken to be a Muslim and killed. That he was also in the company of a friend from another religion also apparently led to them thinking so. It now looks quite clear who the assailants are. That the Sangh Parivar has been itching for a fight after the Moodbidri murder is also well known. I hope the culprits are caught after a fair and impartial investigation. Also hope the lord gives his and his friends families the strength to overcome this tragedy

If so then why the MP rushed to the spot.
The BD VHP or any such people made a big news of asking compensation for Prashant murder just because he had harrased many youth for transporting cattle.
Here a innocent is killed, but the so called majority has no heart to contribute at the funeral ground.
What is the use you gather in thousands, why not collect atleast Rs 100 each and help the victims family.

Wow!! honourable Ramanatha Rai-District in-charge and forest and environment minister,I appreciate your move by announcing Rs 5 lac to Harish's family.Where as your same government has sanctioned 25 lac to Kabeer's family, who was transporting cows illegally. What a double standard of your government. For Hindu boy mere Rs 5 lac and for the Muslim guy Rs 25 lac.Commendable.Only because of such politicians/ministers in our country, the image of our state, country has been nose dived to maximum level and spoiled.Do some justice to the Aam Aadmi/public/common man.You are enjoying inside the air conditioner cabinet at tax payers cost and making common people to suffer.Stupid government.Remove that our chief minister Siddaramayya( Nidderamayya)from his chief minister's post.Only calling press meet and telling something unwanted is not enough.

Dear "Horatagara", please take your misinformation elsewhere. First, Kabeer's family was paid 10 lakhs, not 25. Second, unlike in the case of murders, it was the responsibility of the government to ensure compensation because kabeer was killed by the police themselves - as is the case with any accidental death in the hands of the police. Also incidentally When Nasir was killed in Sajipa Mooda by sangh goons recently, there was no compensation at all! So please take your misinformation 'horata' elsewhere. Let people of the district live in peace

Kabeer's compensation was 10 lakhs. Also he was killed by the police though he was unarmed, not to mention the fact that he wasn't transporting illegally in the first place. In the case of innocent deaths by the police, it was the government's direct responsibility to ensure compensation. But why let facts and logic come in the way of propaganda?

Is this some sort of competition? In the case of Nasir, who was killed by right wing goons in August, there was no compensation at all. Neither was there any in many other murders. What if Muslim orgs start making similar comments? What is the point? Why can't we let people live in peace for God's sake?

Your people hired a Man in Uniform to kill the cattle transporters and you get jealous and protest for 25 lac compensation.
Have patience, they have announced to collect more from the congress activists and here killers are not a men in uniform but men in black.
Imagine how much money can be collected if people like you and me start collecting for these victims.
But instead we expect the government to pay compensation for a hate crime like Moodbidri murder.
How much a community can tollerate if they are targeted just for having beef as a part of diet.
