Mangaluru, Nov 14: The renovated Town Hall here was inaugurated in a colourful ceremony on Saturday November 14, more than a year after the work on it began in September 2014.

District in-charge minister Ramanath Rai cut the ribbon while urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake inaugurated the formal ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, Rai said, "When Mangaluru City Corporation planned the Town Hall renovation, everybody welcomed the move. It is true that during the renovation, there were many delays, still, the Town Hall looks beautiful now. Today is Children's Day. We must remember Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary."

Referring to the untoward incidents in the district over the last couple of days, he said, "I request the people of Dakshina Kannada to maintain communal harmony. There are bad people in society and I pray to god that they become good from heart."

Minister Sorake said, "The future of our world is in the hands of our children. It is the children who will guide our country to a better future. The Town Hall of Mangaluru is in the heart of the city. There were lots of problems and criticism during renovation, but end of it all, Town Hall has now adorned the city.

"We live in a competitive world. The central government has included Mangaluru in the list of Smart Cities, and out of the 20 cities selected by the centre in the first phase, Mangaluru stands first. Every person has to join hands in developing the city," he added.

"Once the Thumbay vented dam is completed, we plan to provide water round the clock. Many projects were taken up after 2011, and there are unused special grants. We are planning to use them for more projects," he said.

MLC Ivan D'Souza said, "I have seen Town Halls of other districts, but none of them is as good as the one we have in Mangaluru. This is the best of all Town Halls, and it is the biggest gift to society. Maintaining an AC hall is not at all easy, but do not hurt artistes by charging them exorbitantly. I request the state government to introduce a uniform rent system for town halls across Karnataka. The MCC must install solar system to produce electricity for Town Hall. I am ready to do my bit in terms of funds for this purpose."

Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said, "Town hall is the main hub in many cities of the world. Even in Mangaluru, the Town Hall should be the centre of all cultural events. The renovated Town Hall should be looked after very well, so that even after five years, it looks as good as new. Even if the maintenance costs cross Rs 10 lac a month, there should not come a situation where it has to be renovated again."

A colourful dance higlighting the traditional and culture of the coastal region was a special attraction of the programme. A tribute was paid to India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary.

MCC deputy mayor Purushotham welcomed. Minister Abhaychandra Jain, MLAs J R Lobo and Mohiuddin Bava, mayor Jacintha Alfred, Kodijal Ibrahim, Sudheer Shetty, Harinath and others were present.

Our DC has done the best thing by requesting the New Town Hall to be well maintained.
Unfortunately there is no Civic Sense in the minds of the Indian People in General and they can never see or notice a garbage bin placed in the vicinity. The entire road or any public facility is all meant as a dumping place.

DC imposes Sec.144 throughout the District and He himself breaks the Law.
    Weddings were cancelled,private
family gatherings were cancelled as per Police. But many Corrupts are gathered in one place under Section 144. Real Smart City when it comes to Law and Order.
If Poor people should have gathered,Police round-up would have been ordered by Mr.Murugan. This is why this City is in such a dilemma as who You are!!!.

Maintenance is the issue for government projects . Even public toilets in mangalore not maintained upto the mark . Opposition always blames and government says shortage of provision of funds for the said project . So many politicians from minister level to MLC gathered just to appear their name on plaque board . After sometime nobody is there to take care of maintenance of the Town Hall....

Request to all politicians, before talking big about the 'smart city' please give us motorable roads, paint the humps and give us good pavements and sufficient parking place in the city. a horde of people can be seen on the stage. What is their contribution to the renovation of town hall? All of them want importance and publicity but do not want to do the duties towards the public.

    Dear vikram, Mangalore,

Neither Patel and Chaaiwaala gave anything to the Town Hall.

Mangalore is developed in SEZ and the chaaiwaala is giving a new name Smart City.

Haam the fundoos gave communal flareups to Mangalore.

Mr Vikram, U call yourself a mangalorean and haven't noticed that Nehru was always there in Town Hall. It's not a newly installed one. By the way, it's a "bust" and not "statue" of Nehru.

Its a shame for one renovated building these many gala of ministers and mlas are attending by using their precious time (rather wasting their time). They have taken such a long time to finish this renovation and they were not able to gather funds in time(rather not keen in gathering) . Probably they have no genuine work to show to people that they have achieved and thats why they have all gathered here to show to people that they are responsible for this renovation !. Probably many of them gathered have no iota of contribution in this renovation still they are made to sit in VIP chairs with their unusual fake smile . This smile does not come out of them when they meet a normal needy person . Its a total shame .

Late MP Sri Ullal Srinivas Mally is responsible for building this town hall for Mangalore. But today nobody took his name and to pay tribute to a great soul who has done so much for Mangalore.Today what Mangaloreans are enjoying is because of contributions of Sri mallya. Are we become so much ungrateful to Sri Mallya?
The statute in the picture looks like Nehru but there should be one statute of Late Mallya in front of Town hall.....
