Kannada litterateur Mahadeva to return Padma Shri, Sahitya Akademi awards

Bengaluru, Nov 14 (PTI): Citing 'rising intolerance' in the country, noted Kannada litterateur and social activist Devanur Mahadeva today said he would be returning his Padma Shri and Sahitya Akademi awards.

He said returning of these awards now was only a gesture as he would be unable to return the indirect benefits he has enjoyed from these awards and feels constricted for it.

"Against my personal behaviour, I remained patient even as many authors and literary figures returned their awards, raising their voice against intolerance in the country, but I'm feeling disgusted after few writers and artists stood in support of those in power," Mahadeva said in a statement.

He alleged that the principles of free speech, tolerance and social justice on which India gained independence has been shrinking after the Nehruvian period.

"These principles are the breath for cultural and social India that we have to construct, but unfortunately there is intolerance spreading in the country without understanding any of this," Mahadeva added.

Known for his work in Dalit literature, he was honoured with Kendra Sahitya Akademi award for his novel "Kusuma Baale" in 1990 and conferred with Padma Shri in 2011.

Mahadeva, without naming anybody, also criticised leaders of the Union Government for branding return of awards by literary personalities as their intolerance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said those forces spreading intolerance in the country feel 'protected' by the central government, because of which they are openly indulging in acts that are disturbing peace.

"Current central government will have to introspect about this to be able to provide good governance," he added.

Mahadeva's important works include Dyavanuru, Odalaala, Kusuma Baale and Edege Bidda Akshara, among others.

By the way who is the Mahadeva,
I am hearing his name for the first time.
I did not even know when and why he got Padma award.
At least he got bit of popularity with return of award.
Probably he did not deserve any award,

Really pitiable situation !! This sort of actions show the real intolerance. There is a big group of people who are guided and driven by their masters at 10 janpath. It is like cat drinking milk closing it's eyes. And there are politicians who applaud such award returnees !!!

Well done Sir. No amount of 'Central Govt. sponsored' no intolerance march can hide the real tolerance experienced by people. It is only their Ostrich like attitude, for which they will regret very soon.

Sorry... we very well know we don't deserve any award by choice of any political bosses and when we win it by our skill and work we will it keep it. No sane person will never use his power or award for political gains or please political bosses. Mr. Beary since you said we deserve an award I think I deserve an reply from you how can an entire Hindu community become Taliban for a incidents like Dadri where a perpetuated criminal killed an individual and why not Paris Terror not given any religious name where the victims were at large from every religion, women , children and old. Let me know why our Media and Political bosses are so afraid to name a religion? Infact it is known fact that, the people who killed in Paris or in Mumbai are the people who wants to form a new world with ancient thinking with one religion, one god, one kind of dress code. If killing for beef eating is religious terror isn't killing in the name of One god not religious? you give me one good answer and I will change my side.

No religion teaches violence but black sheep is there in all religion. I condemn the attack on innocent people whoever they are, whichever religion they belong to, The attackers must be punished, and if not punished in this world, they will surely punished by God.
Intolerance is growing not because few people are bad it is because government is supporting such hate mongers. Why our honorable Prime Minister is silent, why doesn’t he send a message across all hate mongers to stop it and work for peaceful co-existence. They person who use to criticize our ex prime minister Man Mohan Singh for keeping silent, now what happened to him, why he is silent, (silent means NOT ACTING.

You have an excellent logic in your understanding religion followers. Use the same logic when you criticize those who return their awards. Do you think those who returned doesn't have better brain, understanding other religions and logic than you?

It is kinds of Mr. Mahadeva iswho are keeping the flames of intolerance lit. The very biased statements given by these intellectuals to suit their political bosses are dividing the society. when a incidents like Dadri happens India is called as Hindu Taliban and When terror incidents happens in Paris Terror have no religion ? what kind of tolerance is it? The country doesn't belong only to these pseudo intellectuals alone. The voice of common citizen must be heard. when Dadri Victim got 40lakhs why not Prashanth Poojary, Harish ? why didn't the legislators visit them? this is given rise to intolerance. The pseudos' are intolerant and not the central government.I have never heard a statement from the Central government which discriminates the citizens of the country like Mr. Shushil Modi did during his tenure. Then why blame Central Government why not Karnataka Government , why not UP government where the actual incident happened. Anyway, now I know this guy is a Padma awardee....

I felt disgusted after some of them stood in support of power.. sir.. question, aren't u intolerant by saying that u didn't like it and that's why returning the award..? Anyways, u guys r all doing this unnecessarily.. Rajah Singh has asked to come to table to give suggestions, how many of you have given a thought about being part of the solution. Anyways, doesn't matter returning the award, but make sure that u cut it into 2 and clearly say that this piece is for modi and the other piece is for siddu.
