Kasargod, Nov 15: The Hosadurg police on Sunday November 15 arrested a man in connection with the murder of an elderly home-alone lady three days ago in Kanhangad.
Madhu (34) a resident of Balla in Kanhangad, was arrested for allegedly killing Janaki Amma (65) on November 12.
The police said that Madhu was arrested in Dharmasthala and 8 sovereigns of gold that he had stolen from Janaki Amma were also recovered from a forest area in Dharmasthala.
Explaining the course of events, the police said that for about three days before the murder, Madhu, had been pestering Janaki to give him some coolie work. She then asked him to come to her house and pick coconuts from the trees in her property.
Accordingly, on November 12 morning he came to Janaki's house for work, but she realized that he was drunk and gave him Rs 100 and told him to go back. However, Madhu refused and demanded more money. They got into an argument, and when Janaki went back inside the house, he followed her in and hit her on the head with a heavy object. He also strangled her with a shawl and stole 8 sovereigns of her gold ornaments.
After committing the crime, Madhu went to various places in a bid to escape from police, until finally the police traced his cell phone to Dharmasthala and managed to arrest him.
It is said that though Madhu has no other case registered against him, he was caught stealing a couple of times and beaten up by public.
