Udupi, Nov 18: Daijiworld had carried the story about the stinking surroundings of Beedinagudde area where mushrooming of thatched huts occupied by families of migrant labourers who have mainly come from north Karnataka districts have been posing major health hazard. Concern about the poor standards of hygiene and non-availability of water, toilet and other facilities which have triggered an alarm about likely outbreak of communicable diseases had also been expressed by us because of open defecation and dirty surroundings.

Less than two weeks after the report became public, this issue was taken up at the zilla panchayat meeting attended by municipal commissioner, Manjunathaiah, and local MP, Shobha Karandlaje.

Responding to the issue, Shobha noted that the owner of the private land inhabited by the labourers has already been served with notices. "Let him either remove the huts from the area, build houses there and rent them out. If that is not possible, let him evict the huts. If he fails to comply with this, let the deputy commissioner acquire the land," she said.

She said that the municipality is not concerned on what basis the people live there, either on ownership basis or rental arrangement. "As the person collects rent from the dwellers of the huts, it is his responsibility to provide toilets. It is upto him to make alternative arrangements," she said, adding that the main purpose of the civic bodies is to maintain clean environment and protest public interest.

She said that the only alternative left now, as the owner has been overlooking successive notices serviced by the municipal commissioner to fall in line and follow the instructions contained therein, is for the district deputy commissioner to take suitable steps. She said that she has already discussed this issue in the meeting and passed necessary instructions.

I think shobakka some forgets she is a M P. and acts like municipal councilor or local MLA. No doubt this work of migrated workers to be taken care . For every major development work in canara districts we need workers from other districts/states as our people mostly migrating to other countries for their livelihood. But these migrated worker's temporary settlement should be looked after by local body /municipality,. It is the work of local councilors. I feel she should debate in parliament (I doubt whether she got the capacity to debate) issue like work of high way , major industrial development, development of malpe bunder, gangoli kundapur.etc ,

Mr. Ravendra, when Municipal corporator dip in corruption by taking bribes from local land lords, MP has to intervene.

You may be used to stay in Dharavi but we Udupi people don't want to make Udupi as another Dharavi.

When any BJP party MLA or Mp do some thing illegal, the people like you blame Mr.Modi ?? instead of the culprit. Now your Corporator failed to do his duty, you are telling its not MP's duty.

What a shame on your silly mentality.

At least forget the dirty politics for the good cause & save our Udupi citizen from unwanted health hazards.

My dear friends it the right of Indian citizen to stay in their work place, but when poor people although from other districts do not effort to stay at their decent house they have to stay in shanties. Today Mumbai consists of dharavi because tolerance of mubaikars to accept poor people from all over India. Whether these people can been sent abroad for employment? our dharma is accept all kind people and accept them. For information today Mumbai gives livelihood to 1/10th of Indians. Whether shobakka can provide these poor migrants a alternative place to stay in udipi (their place of work)? If the municipality of udipi is so corrupt there are already some opposition parties in municipality to take up the matter with lokayukta or other judiciary machinery. Being a MP what is her contribution to development of udipi dist.We read her name in news paper only taking the communal issues.
