Kundapur: Five months on, son's search for missing mother continues

Kundapur, Nov 25: The case about Malathi Shetty (65), wife of retired teacher from Korgi Charukottige in the taluk, Bhaskar Shetty, going missing under mysterious circumstances, completed five months on November 24. But, the case is stranded where it was five months ago, with not even an inch of progress having been achieved.

Malathi who left her home at around 1.30 pm on June 24 with the purpose of visiting a neighbor disappeared suddenly without being noticed by anyone. Efforts of police department, Malathi's family and close relatives, and others have failed to yield any result. At the same time, her son Satish Shetty, working as software engineer in United States of America has approached the state high court seeking court intervention in the matter.

The division bench of the state high court, which took up habeas corpus petition filed by Satish Shetty, has asked the home department, western range inspector general of police, and policemen of Kundapur station to submit details of investigation conducted in the case so far.

Malathi had finished her lunch on that fateful day, and had placed rice for cooking on the hearth again, before going out. No one has seen her thereafter, and even district superintendent of police, Annamalai, visited her home and directed police officials to hasten the investigation. But no progress has been achieved till now, as the investigation has become directionless.

Satish Shetty has been keeping track of investigation from abroad by keeping in constant touch with police officials and family members. He also opened a website (http://www.MomMissing.org) for the purpose, and had announced reward of one lac rupees to anyone giving any clue about his mother. Now he has filed habeas corpus petition in the high court through his brother-in-law, Ram Mohan Shetty.

The only plausible theory about her disappearance can be attributed to the lure of gold ornaments, as she was wearing ornaments worth Rs 3.5 lac then. But sniffer dogs which returned after roaming in the compound of the house, searches conduced in water bodies of the taluk, spreading information, pasting of posters carrying her photo and physical features, and verification of CCTV footage in pilgrimage centres across several districts have failed to give any lead.

It is widely believed that Malathi is alive, but there is no clue where she went or why she is hiding away from family. If she was kidnapped for money, no one has ever called the family seeking payment of ransom.

The police have reached a deadlock. When the question was raised at a recent press meet in Udupi, SP Annamalai had said it was a tough case to crack. "She voluntarily left her home due to some family problems. Hence it is tough to trace her. No one has kidnapped her," he had said.

The similar incident happened to my mother when she was around 75yrs.old..she had come to Bombay from Goa to visit my sister in virar..my brother who was travelling with her in the Virar train asked her to come with him in the Gents compartment but she was very stuburn and went into the Ladies...she also got off at the wrong station...my brother when he got off at Virar went to the Ladies as she was not to be seen on the platform in Virar.

My brother started searching her all over..took the next train back to see if she got off wrongly but to no avail did he find her...we were so worried as she had some gold on her person and we feared for the worst..were gave a missing complaint and announcement was made in the news channel in hindi ...for a whole week after that we prayed and looked for here everywhere..then one day unexpectedly she was seen below the building very disguised and with no ornaments like a chain, two bangles, and wedding ring..they were all missing..never mind it did not matter..

the only thing that mattered was that she was alive and came back on her own but in a very dirty condition..she told us that she entered a wedding mandup and just because she was dirty ..they felt she was a beggar..they gave her some food to eat she told us..and we were so sorry for her situation ..we cleaned her and took her to the doctor..who told us that she may be in the process of Dementia and we have to keep a watch on her and not leave her alone..when she came back to Goa where she lived thereafter she developed Alzheimer and we lost(died) her in 2006 ..

I only hope this mother of someone comes back one day safe..my heart feels for the son. Thank you for reading my story ..I felt I should share it .Oh God please help this son to find his mother soon.

Sad that the woman is not yet found or no clue till now.Can understand sons and Familys worrys.Imay be not correct, but I feel the Lady kept Rice to cook and left the house indicates that she was at that Moment not in a stabile state.May be she forgot it about Rice and went out or had oncoming Alzheimer ?such People at that Age do so at the beginning.Noone can make out.Thatswhy she might have walked and walked ,slept somewhere ,reached some place ?search her insome Ashrams,or houses where deserted People are housed. Her appearence can also Change than before. Was noone in house as she left?Any Relations did anything to her?because of Money ,Gold?Did anyone harm her and said she wanted to go to visit?sad.Hope the best for her return to her Family.

    Rudolf Mumbai,

In all probability Malathi with her Gold is safe somewhere. If she was robbed only the Gold would have disappeared. Hope for the best.

Question is if she is safe, with her mental faculties intact, definitely she would have contacted back home or come back by taking the help of somebody!!

This appears to be a very mysterious case as the victim concerned had no plausible reasons like any family issues, psychiatric disorder, amnesia, dementia etc., also the family is financially well off, and she just vanishes into thin air!!! In all probability the heavy gold that she was wearing is the reason for the mysterious disappearance!!

    Disappeared without a clue!

As per SP, She voluntarily left her home due to some family problems.
Son's Love for mother is natural but why he could not solve family problems if any, when she was living with them.
Let us hope that she is alive and will return to the family one day.

There is no clue about who was staying with Malathi Shetty.
who was there at home when she left the house after lunch? I think that person should be able to help in finding her.
