Rising intolerance is disturbing, says Rahul Gandhi in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Nov 25 (PTI): On the eve of Winter session of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi today said Congress "strongly" believed in GST, but government should reach out to the Opposition on certain issues, including the cap on rate.

The Congress vice president outlined the party's stand on the contentious Goods and Service Tax(GST) Bill even as he made an all-round attack on the Modi government calling it "much worse" than "suit-boot-ki-sarkar." The NDA government is keen to push key reforms legislations like the stalled GST bill in the Winter session.

Fielding questions on a wide range of issues during an interaction with students of a women's college here, Gandhi also spoke on the "rising intolerance", saying it "disturbs" him as an Indian, higlighting that "live and let live" was the country's biggest strength.

Targeting Narendra Modi, Gandhi said he believes the country could be run from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and that he alone could transform the country.

The interaction was the first in the series of Gandhi's outreach to the students across the campuses in the country.

Targetting Modi's style of functioning, Gandhi said there were very few people with decision making powers at the Centre and "one man decides evey single decision."

"...one man can't have all the answers...," he said, adding dialogue was very important.

Asked about GST, which is hanging fire for the last several years, Gandhi said, "we strongly believe in GST."

He said GST and other bills were "very important" but the government's approach has to be one of reaching out to the Opposition.

Speaking to reporters later, Gandhi said the Congress would raise in Parliament the issues of "rising intolerance", which was "very disturbing", GST and also Prime Minister's "silence" on various issues.

Questioned why the GST bill was being stalled, he said it was Congress which brought it forward and "...we are for GST...we support GST..." But, he noted, the BJP had opposed it and blocked it for three years with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, then in the Opposition, even justifying blocking Parliament as a strategy.

Gandhi said there were three differences between BJP and Congress on GST. They related to cap on tax to be charged, dispute resolution and one per cent tax on inter-state sales (doing away with it).

He said government had to accept the fact that Congress "sits in Parliament", "Congress has a view" and "Congress has 20 per cent hope" (referring to the people's mandate).

Attacking the Modi government for not having "conversation" with the Opposition, he said the Prime Minister had not even once picked up phone and spoken to any Congress leader, which his predecessor Manmohan Singh used to do.

Asked about debate on "rising intolerance" particularly in the context of controversial remarks of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, he said "blanket attack" does not give any solution. "Shouting at people is very easy" but "much more powerful" thing would be listen to someone."..let us have conversation."

"I don't like what is happening on intolerance. It disturbs me as an Indian," Gandhi said.

A student asked Gandhi about his frequent "suit-boot-ki-sarkar" jibes at the Modi government, questioning what was wrong with "suit and boot ki sarkar" as long as it took steps to improve the economy.

Faulting the government for the "way it was operating", he said Modi had promised creation of two crore jobs a year. "It is perfectly okay" if the government focussed on large businesses and produced jobs but the benefits should reach the poor.

But the government had slashed expenditure on welfare schemes, including on education and health care, he said.

All that the government was doing was giving contracts to large business people, that too five or six corporates close to the dispensation, which was "much worse than a suit-boot-ki-sarkar. It is 5 or 6 suit boots ki sarkar".

He said the economy was in the doldrums and the country was not moving. "Suit-boot-ki-sarkar is failing.. it has completely failed..."

Gandhi said a group of foreign investors had met him recently and he asked them if they were happy with the Modi government. They had told him that "nothing has happened" and "it is not working."

In his opening remarks, Gandhi said the central difference between the BJP and RSS and Congress was that his party wanted to speak to every single person even with whom it does not agree. But they did not believe in conversation.

Gandhi raked up the prolonged strike by Film and Television Institute of India(FTII) students over the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as its Chairman, saying they were told to "shut up", Dalit children "being called dogs" by a Union Minister (V K Singh) over the Haryana incident and the Dadri killing over beef eating rumours.

Rahul faces embarassing moments in Bengaluru college

Rahul Gandhi today faced some embarassing moments when a large section of his student audience at a women's college responded in resonating 'yes' to his poser whether they thought Prime Minister Narendra Modi s ambitious 'Swachh Bharat' and 'Make In India' campaigns were working.

During an interaction with students of Mount Carmel college, a leading women's college here, the Congress vice president took an instant poll asking the young audience about the twin flagship programmes while slamming the Modi government

Gandhi asked the students whether 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' ('Clean India Mission') was working, to which most replied in a resounding 'yes'.

It did not end here as the Congress MP again asked the students if they thought the 'Make in India' programme was really working and the students again gave the same reply, making the leader apparently uncomfortable.

Gandhi hastened to tell the audience that he differed with them.

"You might see it I don't," said Gandhi, who sported a grey T shirt, adding,"Anyway, I don't clearly see a vision that the BJP is projecting".

The interaction was the first in the series of Gandhi's outreach to the students across the campuses in the country.

Rahul later talking to reporters said the nature of the response of the students to his questions were not clear.

"Actually it was not clear. On 'Swachh Bharat', half the room said nothing had happened and some said something had happened. On 'Make in India', I think more people said not much had happened, some said things have happened".

The kind of response by the students to Rahul's poser led BJP to say his "disconnect" with the ground was "exposed" and shown through the mirror by the youths of the country.

"When asked about Swachh Bharaat Abhiyan and Make in India, the youths of this country said that these concepts are moving ahead and Rahul was shocked. Why was he shocked? Because of the very fact that he has a great disconnect, he does not know the vibrations on the ground. Leave aside the country, he cannot lead the youths of the country," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.

He said Rahul has "no capacity" to lead even the youths not to speak of the country. "His ignorance was snubbed by the young students," he said.

BJP Secretary Sidharth Nath Singh said Gandhi's interaction with students at Bengaluru should caution Congress Party and leadership that Indian youth is not willing to accept "obstructionist and negative" agenda of Congress.

"The snap poll done by RG is a good indicator that PM Modi's initiative like 'Swachh Bharat', 'Make in India' and others have strong support of the youth. It was quite heartening to learn that Indian youth had straight questions on why GST and other reforms are being blocked.

"We hope RG and Congress would learn from the interaction that Indian Youth want Parliament to function and therefore they would not disturb the winter session," he said.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, however, said Gandhi answered questions unlike Prime Minister Modi and this is the way for the country's leader to interact.

"This is the way, the leader of the country should interact with the young and the countrymen everywhere -- sometimes disagreeing with them, sometimes agreeing with them and aswering their basic inquisitiveness on how India should look in 5 years, 10 years and 20 years. Rahul ji has answered, what no other political leader has done.

Rahul Gandhi's relevance reminds me of Vermiform appendix.

Long time ago ( grass eating animals) appendix had its use. But now it is there nut not needed.
Does not give any benefit to the body. But can potentially cause harm as appendicitis.

We had kings and emperors and dynasties. Over time only the ceremonial kings remained.

Congress needs to re brand itself and get rid of the ceremonial kings- they have lost their relevance.

An organization that is slow to read the writing on the wall " change the model or perish"

Times have changed, generations have changed and therefore Congress with Rahul is already loosing relevance.

Can Congress handle progress and for once have ambitions ( road map , plans) for a much better India than Modi's - that is the only way.

No doubt today's students are smarter than the students of 50s & 60s, Rahul Gandhi ought to have known this fact and should have avoided questions that required Yes/No answers. The students may be 20 years of age and may not be knowing the India we see today is not the work of last 18 months but the work of last 70 years and the students may be unaware who played major role in making what it is today. Rahul may have failed but he should use failure as a stepping stone to success.

The youth of this country are impatient! They're impatient to have all-round progress, well-paying and challenging jobs, high standard of living, in addition to a clean and healthy environment (of course, without unpleasant communal masala, which the majority of the youth/people of India are least interested in).

If GST, 'Make in India' and 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' could help in achieving these goals, we can even tolerate a 'suit-boot sarkar', provided all these schemes are carried out in a systematic and transparent manner.

Let all progressive Indian citizens hope that the 'grand old party' of India and it's leaders understand this harsh reality and learn to provide a strong, constructive opposition to the ruling party, for the common benefit of India's impatient millions (sorry, crores)

It was wrong to have asked about Swatch Bharat in Bangalore since bengaluru is ranked amongst the Swatch cities of India with Mysuru being the top most (first) in a recent survey published by the GOI. Failure to read the survey reports can cause embarrassment. Quite natural for the students to say YES in Bengaluru. Second is the MAKE IN INDIA issue raked up. "MAKE IN INDIA" concept is very much found in the Foreign Trade Policy of 2009-2014 of UPA 2 of Dr. Manmohan Singh where incentives are given. Though not called "MAKE IN INDIA" the concept is embedded in all the Indian Five Year Plans. Why is Mr Rahul not capitalising on this. Why is the Congress gifting away the "Make in India" concept to Mr Modi. Mr. Modi is just repackaging Congress led UPA programmes as his own by changing names and resorting to publicity which was not done by Dr Manmohan Singh. A little homework will help reveal the truth.

The congress and the scion of Gandhi family are out to destroy the country. They did not do anything for the country when they were in power for last more than 5 decades. But they want PM Modi to give proof of development within 15 months of coming to power . They are just misleading the people by spreading lies about the present govt.He never misses an opportunity to take a dig at Modi's suite - boot sarkar and claims that he and his party work for the poor. Actually they (his mother) is said to be richer than the queen of England, and the less said the better about his super rich sister and brother in law. They all wear high end branded clothes and travel in style by chartered flights and state of the art vehicles and then they expect people to believe their cooked up stories. They may be able to fool some people but not the educated urban youth. The theme of Swacch Bharat has caught the attention of many a people which can be seen on sundays. So Mr. Rahul and congress if you can not help in nation building at least please do not bring down the country with your unethical jibes.

It is very shameful act of Rahul. For what purpose he visited this college? Is it election campaign or political party meeting? Children’s are future of our country why you are feeding negative in their mind. Do you really want to develop our country? Swach bharath cannot be done by any single person. When each person himself take part in this mission then this abhiyan will 100% success. But you people don’t want the success of this abhiyan bcoz you may loose the political milage. You can hate Modi/BJP but it should not have an impact on our countries’ image/development . First of all you people talking about our great Mahatma Gandhi but not following him. Swach bharat it was the dream of Gandhi & Modi taken forward this scheme. But you people are doing politics here & want college student support you. Even today most of the college/school students are participating in swach barath abhiyan since they want cleanness of their city/village & they have experienced it very well. Hence they supported the swach bharath. But these things you could not understand bcoz your only one ambition is to blame Modi & want unsuccess of his project.

Too much intolerance on the part of Bangalore Students, they did not dance to the tunes of Congress party as like Congress chamchas doing the intolerance drama since many days.
Congress will blame Modi for girls intolerance.
Just imagine when girls show such a intolerance towards him what will be there for him if there were boys?
Congress can do it's cunning politics only with uneducated people & with it's chelas & chamchas. Educated people will never embrace them & their divisive vote bank politics.
He thought it's a minority institution, he can defame the Govt by his foolishness & get out of it easily.
But he got what he deserved from the students.
Writing on the wall is "BJP will rule this country forever because they have clear, well defined policies towards the nation & they are patriotic".
Make in India will be a success story & i would like to remind Congress chamchas even for a child to write annual exam he or she has to study for one year in the class. To implement projects needs infrastructure, electricity, water resources, roads etc.., since our former so called SECULAR alias Psuedo Sikular rulers ( Congress & Sikulars alliance UPA) only applied their mind for loot. So don't show your frustration for MODI's popularity.
Let all of your Chelas & Chamchas do whatever drama against the Government & the Nation, you will bite the dust.
It's shame that a leader is criticising a cleanliness program which applies to all including him. See how he has come by wearing expensive T-Shirt, Trousers to show off in front of girls.

i have read one of the commentors below telling that rahul should not have uttered these words in front of rich urban students as they are educated, dont know the prblems of poor etc and instead should have uttered in front of uneducated and poor people.
today these guys dont know that village peoples are also educated and are equally aware of happenings like urbane people.
the divide which used to be existed before between rural and urbane has vanished today because of rapid globalisation which has not spared india either.
caste politics, garibi hatao politics are a thing of the past.now only development politics will find any takers .that too only if they are serious in what they say and not as a election rhetoric.

I feel Rahul Gandhi was ill prepared or not been briefed properly. When he was stumped the first time he should have changed the topic and spoken more on Womens Development, education & jobs in India. He made a blunder by getting in central politics.

Ultimately, he made a fool of himself and that of the Congress party as a whole. He looked very childish to me.The CM could have briefed him up earlier i thought.

The simple fact is the media doesn't like Rahul and the country doesn't want another Gandhi scion. Hence all the mocking directed towards the Gandhi family. One cannot replace the Gandhi family and their contributions, but other politicians can be easily replaced. For e.g. if Modi does not do what his masters want him to, he will be easily replaced. How else was he able to trounce LK Advani and others?

simple fact is India doesnt like cheap politics.

We elected Mr. Modi for next 5 year as our Prime Minister, if he fail to deliver his promises offcourse we have chances to send him back to gujarat.
I guess More than Mr. Modi Rahul is campigning for election. for 2019 general election.
He want to make modi as villan in publics view.

yesturday i saw video of Rahul saying " Modiji is in forign trip and am with poor and farmers"
but he failed to understand why modiji is travelling to other countries. May be he thought Modiji is doing same what he did in 56 days.
Difference between Rahul and Modiji is, Modi ji understand the Pulse of Indian that people hardly waiting for development. and Rahul thought people interested in communal issues and we can fool them for long time.

Mr. Rahul Gandhi, your Grand ma late Mrs. Indira Gandhi was able leader and was intelligent politician, your dad late Mr. Rajeev Gandhi was also intelligent and had leadership qualities, they were born leaders, you have none of them, you have a low IQ, does not know the reality, neither you know how to interact with most intelligent and smart current youth.
Mount Carmel College in Bengaluru is most reputed institution, the girls studied from this college have built great careers in life, they have excelled in their profession, most of them are working or teaching in reputed Universities in USA, Canada, UK & Australia, we have met few of these ladies (who educated from Mount Carmel College) in Sydney.

Mr. Rahul Gandhi, you will never become PM of India, keep dreaming, the day by chance you got that position, you will humiliate the whole nation and our great country will doom.

No matter, how much you critize Honourable PM Mr. Modi, we feel he knows what he talks, he does not use paper clips in front of him to read, he speaks from his mind & heart, he has great leadership qualities, he has been appreciated and respected here & abroad by every Indian, all nationalities. He is taking a right step, you love him or hate him, you can't just beat this guy.

There is no intolerance in India, there are few minor issues which have been happening ever since we got Independence, visit Syria, Iraq,Nigeria, Somalia & Pakistan, whats happening in those countries is intolerance. This intolerance business is created by your party to tarnish PM Modi's image.
What happened recently in Karnataka is intolerance, did you ask CM Siddu to request state govt award winners to return their awards with prize money? Did you take a march to Raj Bhavana to meet Gov regarding intolerance happened in Karnataka due to Tipu Jayanthi? No Mr. Rahul Gandhi you did not do that, you have no issues in Congress ruled states.

Rahul was not stumped. He was surprised that the audience has bought into the charms of Selfie Modi. If thousand people sing praises of Modi, that doesn't make Modi a leader and vice-versa if thousand people mock Rahul, that doesn't make Rahul a Pappu. Leadership is forged just like iron and when crisis befalls only then they shine.

Even though we hear songs of his praise, Modi has not gone through any trials and hardships. Rahul on the other hand like his father had to face the predicament of being born in the Nehru-Gandhi clan. Many mocked Rajiv Gandhi when he was alive and ultimately eliminated him, just like they mocked and eliminated Indira Gandhi as well as Sanjay Gandhi.

Selfie Modi doesn't live with such a burden and as long as he pays his dues to those who put him in power, his future is secure. As it is, the police answer to the chaddis, who have set a parallel government. The price will eventually be paid by the common man, not by Modi and his chaddi friends.

He captured the audiance when he talked about women self help group. Then he was lost.

I did expect Arnab Goswamy making merry in his chat show. But the way he puts his jingoestic prelude, it is clear either Times office is in BJP HQ, or BJP got a office in Times HQ. No other channel twists and tweaks in favor of BJP like Arnab does.

..KUDOS to students..RG should have asked some question on Intolerance..Everything would have cleared by then..He says "one man decides every single decision."..MMS gave everything to others, every one looted & put on his head..now almost 2 years not single news of corruption..MODI method proved best for INDIA..GST is important for Congress but they want GIVE & TAKE..what is this!!..Good that students know what MODI is doing in INDIA & abroad..MODI pass, RG failed..let them cry Intolerance another 3 years..
