Bengaluru, Nov 26: The motion for the removal of Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Y Bhaskar Rao was referred to the chief justice of the State High Court by Legislative Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa on Thursday.

As per the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, 1984, which was recently amended, the Assembly Speaker is empowered to refer the motion passed by the Assembly to the Chief Justice of High Court. 

The Chief Justice will then nominate a judge of the High court to frame definite charges against the Lokayukta on the basis of which the investigation would be held.

Both houses of the State legislature admitted the motion on the removal of controversial Justice Bhaskar Rao, over an alleged extortion racket in the anti-graft ombudsman’s office involving his son.

With the issue now being referred to High Court Justice, the Lokayuka will be automatically precluded from discharging duties as Justice Rao has been continuously on leave since July.
