Mangalore: Konkani Manyata Divas – Eventful Day

Mangalore, Aug 19: Konkani Manyata Divas, the day on which Konkani language included in the 8th schedule of Indian Constitution way back on 20th Aug, 1992. This is the special occasion for Konkani speaking people to feel proud about their language. The reason is, after a long struggle by Konkani activists, the Union Government had consented to include Konkani in 8th schedule of Indian Constitution.








Karnataka Konkani Academy is observing this day on Sunday, 19th August in a unique way. At the same time, the Academy is also celebrating the diamond jubilee of Indian Independence and golden jubilee of statehood of Karnataka. More than that, Konkani has been included in the syllabus of schools across Karnataka. Hence, the Academy is taking this privilege to thank the government too.

Many competitions have been organized to commemorate ‘Konkani Manyata Divas. The day began with the cross country race at 7.30 am. Later the various state level competitions were held at Ganapathy High School. Thousands of contestants participated in competitions like story telling for primary students, singing competitions for higher primary students; dance competitions for high school student were successfully brought out the hidden talents of children.












More than that, tug of war competition for men and passing the ball competition for women gave the sensational experience to the crowd gathered here. Teams from Honnavar, Bhatkal, Kundapur, Udupi etc have participated in this Manyata Divas. In between, various folklore dances performed by the various professional groups, kept the Konkani spirit alive among the gathering.
