Mangalore, Aug 19: Those people who have been supporting Kannada script for Konkani received a huge moral support from M P Prakash, state home minister on Sunday Aug 19.
Speaking at the concluding ceremony of ‘Konkani Manyatha Divas,’ organized by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, at Ganapathy High School grounds, he said that, 50% of Konkani speaking people of the country are living across Karnataka. Hence, it serves better for all to accept Kannada script for Konkani universally, which is taught in the schools of Karnataka now.
“The state government has introduced Konkani in the schools from this academic year, as an optional language. This is only because the Kannadigas always showed their love and concern towards other languages. If all Konkani people accept Kannada script in the school, the state government would render a lot more support to promote this language in schools,” he assured.
At the same time he asked Tuluvas to work on introducing a script for Tulu language.
Violence:
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have known for all-round developments in the state. But in recent days, minor clashes led into major violence here. This has jeopardized the reputation of this region. Hence, the people of coastal region should also bear the responsibility to maintain peace in the district, M P Prakash urged.
“One can’t achieve anything by using arms. There are constitutional ways to find remedy for every problem. If the Naxals come forward to hold talks by surrendering their arms, the JD (S)-BJP led coalition government will definitely can have talks with them”, he said.
At the same time, he was felicitated by the Konkani Sahitya Academy, for aiding in introducing Konkani in the schools throughout Karnataka.
Gabriel Vaz, member of the Academy, H S Shivarudrappa, registrar of the Academy, Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, vicar general of Mangalore diocese and MLA Yogish Bhat were present on the dais.
Academy president Eric Ozario welcomed the gathering and delivered the key note address. Roy Castelino proposed vote of thanks. Charan Mallya and Irene Rebello compered the programme.
