Beltangady: Man chops off teacher's hand, shoots himself dead

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady (DV)

Beltangady, Dec 3: In a shocking incident reported at Mulikar in Dharmasthala here on Thursday December 3 evening, a man allegedly chopped off the hand of an anganwady teacher before shooting himself dead.

Umesh Gowda (41), a resident of Neriya, allegedly attacked Honnamma (37) with a sickle and cut off her hand, before taking his own life with a rifle.

It is learnt that Umesh was in love with Honnamma, and had proposed to her some months ago. Sources said that at first her family had given their consent, but later cancelled the marriage as they came to know he was addicted to alcohol.

But Umesh refused to back down, and on two occasions, had barged into the anganwady school and allegedly attacked Honamma.

On Thursday evening, he came near the anganwady again, armed with a sickle and a rifle, and allegedly chopped off Honnamma's hand. Honnamma, who was horror-struck, immediately ran inside the anganwady school and locked herself up.

Meanwhile, Umesh went to a spot a little distance away and shot himself dead with the rifle he had brought.

Honnamma was admitted to a hospital.

Beltangady police have registered a case.

A person addicted to alcohol loses control of his sense, senses and is most likely to commit senseless acts.

Hope a mass awareness programme is undertaken not only by doctors, religious leaders, various social service organisations, but also respected leaders of society, for creating awareness on its negative aspects and to strive for its eventual eradication.

Alcoholism can not only ruin the physical & financial health of an individual, but is capable of ruining entire families and negatively affect the society, at large. Cases such as the above, need to be highlighted and medical treatment/rehabilitation of the affected individuals has to be given serious consideration, not only by the Government agencies, but by society, at large.
