Udupi, Dec 4: The District Bar Association observed Advocates Day at the District Court campus, here on Thursday December 3.

District incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.

In his address he said that many advocates fought to rid the country of slavery, but social evils need to be eliminated.

We hope India stands top in the world in overall growth by 2020.

In the present scenario social evils in society are of a huge magnitude.

Vinay Kumar Sorake informed that nearly 34% of the politicians with criminal backgrounds are found in the state. As many as 2,208 are billionaires and 1,398 are criminals, who have contested in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

As per sources nearly 193 contenders out of 543 Lok Sabha members have criminal backgrounds.

Dr Justice Jawad Rahim, member, Law Commission of Karnataka and former judge Karnataka High court addressing the gathering. He said that currently the country has a great asset in the form of senior citizens and younger generation are the strength of the nation. There is need to keep this point in mind.

There are many professions, but law is the real profession, as a lawyer achieves his own identity. A lawyer can be judged by his performance. Freedom is to be preserved.

He informed that increase in cases means that people have developed trust in the court of law.

Mediation centers are not substitutes for courts. It is not enough for lawyers to restrict their work to courts alone, but they should also feel the pulse of society.

Shivshankar Amarannavar, district and sessions court judge, SP Annamalai, Shobha Aithal, judge, consumer forum and others were present at the occasion.

Dayanand K, president of the district bar association welcomed the gathering and Ronald Praveen Kumar, deputy secretary proposed the vote of thanks.
