Mangaluru: Draft proposal for Smart City almost ready, public invited to give feedback

Mangaluru, Dec 4: "The draft proposal for the Mangaluru Smart City project will be ready by this evening. The draft will be released for the public on Saturday December 5 or Sunday December 6 and the public can give their feedback till December 11 on mygov.in portal. By December 14, the final draft will be sent to the union government," informed Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner Dr H N Gopalkrishna.

Addressing media persons at the office of MLC Ivan D'Souza here on Friday December 4, Dr Gopalkrishna further said, "The draft has to be given in the form of a video in a DVD along with a soft copy and three hard copies.

"Feedback for the Smart City project was invited from the public and it recieved a tremendous response. About 46,000 people have given their feedbacks, out of which about 11,000 participated in the first phase while the second phase witnessed a participation of about 35,000," he added.

Elaborating on the Smart City proposal he said that it required the MCC to answer a set of 43 questions and a 93-page proposal was being prepared.

During the press meet, MLC Ivan D'Souza gave his suggestions for the Smart City project. They are:

1. Making the people of Mangaluru smart before implementing the Smart City project.
2. Developing the outskirts of the city.
3.Developing the city on the theme of coastal city and developing the port.
4. Making the city self-reliant on power requirements through solar overhead units and solar parks.
5. Developing the beaches and organizing cultural programmes.
6. Developing the ponds of the city for 24x7 water supply.
6. Developing footpaths and bicycle paths.
7. Subways and escalators for the public to cross the road.
8. Creating vehicle-free zones in the city
9. Developing industrial areas as per China model.
10. Utilzing government guest houses and using them efficiently by making them multi-storied.
11. Alloting different timings for the schools and colleges to minimize the traffic.
12. Creating shopping streets and food streets for the city.
13. Introducing underground metro trains.
14. Zone offices of MCC for the smart administration.
15. Constructing ring roads around the city.
16. Uniformity for transportaion vehicles and various stands for transportaion to various places.
17. Developement of city markets.
18. Including the airport within the city corporation limits.

Mayor Jacintha Alfred, former mayor Shashidhar Hegde were also present in the press meet.

    MLC, did you cut and paste from google your suggestions? and I do not understand why should the Commissioner make announcements at an MLC office. I hope the commissioner is aware that this MLC is "nominated" and not "elected" by the voters.

    Here are my suggestion:

    1. Water - Development of water bodies is most important. Dig wells, remove dirt from ponds and rivers, build small dams, etc. etc.

    2. Stop permission to build new buildings. Design drainage connectivity across the city and treatment of water. No untreated or chemicals should enter water bodies.

    3. Electricity - tidal, solar, must be harnessed along with existing.

    4. Metro and rail connectivity - Mangaluru - Udupi - Kasargodu. Furter, 4lane roads need to be looked into, with public transports.

    5. Waste collection and treatment centers.

    6. Police force need to be sensitized and must work for people. This will bring peace.

    Concretisation of 50 meters of road in front of Forum Fiza Mall is going on since January 2015. Couple of more weeks and we would be ushering in 2016. The road is yet not open to the public. So much for the speed of the developmental work in our city.

    In the Smart City plan, there is nothing mentioned about increasing the green cover for the city is spoken . It Looks like human beings wants only buildings and concrete structures. what about planting trees so that the Temperature of city's heat is controlled . Planting of trees and watering them for the first one year is important. This needs to be added as point number 19 .

    The name is quite good but the requirements of such city are vast and need multi directional issues to be handled with care like surveillance, sanitation, basic amenities, self respect, religious tolerance, infrastructure development by adopting advanced mechanism like roads, bridges, air passage, river and sea passages, surrounding city developments and overall people with broad mentality to accept the good and comfortable which is my dream smart city which I hope to see in Mangaluru in near future

    Smart cities should have footpath for roads and good motorable roads and toilets at least paid. 24 hours electricity and water. congress and bjp are a curse to mangalore.

    The words "Smart City" are in itself covering a broad spectrum of activity that involves smart plans and thoughts that will help the City grow in all facets of life that will benefit the people.

    "Smart City" involves smart people with ideas that will not only help Mangalore to promote the intellectual segment but also covers a wide variety of areas that involve our social, economical, industrial, technological as well as religious functions that will bring not only new outlook of the City but also would bring a long term stability added with peace and harmony.

    Smart City concept requires expertize that are familiar with some of the progressive thinking with a selfless attitude so that all aspects of future scope is viewed with a broad mind and also a neutral mind.

    Smart City planners also should include people from the Corporate sectors that can come on board and vent not only their thoughts but also come up with monetary support for which they need a "Tax Exempt" benefit. Smart City planners should come from not only Corporate Sector but also from the Educational Sector, Banking Sector, Athletic Sector, Health Sector and also from the Secular sector so that new ideas are blossomed and new ideas are placed on the Agenda for smooth and expeditious decisions.

    First and foremost aspect of the "Smart City" think-tank is to create a non-partisan group so that they welcome new ideas that reflect upon a long and durable plan that will elevate Mangalore to a higher pedestal.

    "Smart City" concept should have a leader with knowledge and also a vision that will help Mangalore to move forward in a parallel pattern with another 99 Cities that have been ed all over India.

    There are some excellent Groups that prevail in India who have the background and experience in tackling the Commercial as well as Technical issues whose expertise we should seek in collaboration with the Municipality officials, City officials and also the private sector in order to succeed.

    It took 8 years minimum to complete a PUKI Bejai Market which was inaugurated recently and till today the market is not shifted into the new market. I fear that it might take another 8 months or even 8 years to shift the market into new market. This particular project is an example of total sheer bad management and total stupidity of Mangalore municipality. I have seen through RTI that the Bejai market cost Rs. 4 Crores which is questionable. Does this PUKI Bejai Market cost Rs. 4 Crores. Undoubtedly it is a inflated project far beyond than expected. If this PUKI market can take 8 years then Smart city will take 80 or even 800 years to achieve, mark my words.

    Everybody has a wish and plan for a smart City.well,no smart City will be useful when it doesnt function properly when employers are not working with smart mind and enthusiasm .Allways strikes,religious oppose,hatred.Think good and work good.Then only functions better.Once politician opens a smart City and come for election again,citizens Problems are not heard,no smart City will survive.First should be ground necessity should be provided for citizens like water,electricity continuous,without break,health requirements to poor ,no mamool at any dept.police Service without difference to all without taking any extras.Only then we can speak of smart City.Toilets to public are a good idea,but cleanliness should be also thought otherwise it will be a big nuesense and cause of health Problems.

    Make Mangalore a sister city of Dubai with the emphasis on travel, education, business and health care. With the proper approach, UAE Govt. can match the grant given to Mangalore by the Central Govt.

    Thousands of Mangaloreans have been working in UAE and contributed to the development of that country. Also, Mangaloreans have already established ties with UAE and it will be easy for some of the NRI heavy weights to approach the UAE Govt.

    It will be a win-win situation for both the cities.

    TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: May I add my own suggestions for the Smart City Project?
    1. Establish a modern police station with top end officials and equipment including patrols, etc.
    2. Develop a multi purpose sports stadium in different areas to inculcate a sporting mindset for the young and old.
    3. Construct theatres and halls for those interested in performing arts, music and the like.
    4. Establish modern health centres in each and every area to help the poor and needy needing medical aid.
    5. Organise international relations for the Mangalore city to arrange cultural, educational, health and tourism ventures with other sister cities all over the world.
    6. Set up a code of conduct for all establishments and restaurants with regard to cleanliness, uniforms, using fresh items, inspection by health authorities, etc.

    Also design a city such that there is enough and more trees around. Let it not just be a concrete jungle. The earth gives life to us. Respect the earth and design a city taking into consideration the landscape of the city. Let it not end up being a city like 'Delhi'- most polluted city, and Chennai - Drowned in a few days rain. Topography of the land was disregarded on providing all kinds of infrastructure to the city. Get the latest tech for solar, not the outdated ones.

    Will the City buses stop on the road itself while d r o p p i n g the passengers will it stand by the side of the road???!!!

    Almost all city buses in Mangalore will move fast and suddenly will stop on the middle of the road for ping the passengers disrupting the behind vehicle unmovable.

    WILL THERE BE ANY ARRANGEMENTS TO STOP THIS KIND OF CITY BUSES CRUELTY.
