CM thinks aloud on banning astrological predictions in TV channels

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Dec 8: "Entire families in villages and towns are seen to be glued to television sets in the morning, watching astrological predictions aired by private television (TV) channels, whiling away their precious time. I am at a loss for words on how to stop these people from following blind beliefs and superstitions, and toeing the line advocated by astrologers and self-styled religious guides. This appears to be a systematic plan. Our women and girls, particularly those belonging to the lower strata of the society, should be wary of such programmes," felt Karnataka chief minister(CM), Siddaramaiah. When several people from among the audience cheered him for these remarks and asked him to ban such programmes, he promised to think positively on this suggestion.

It may be recalled that the state government had expressed itself in favour of bringing a law to ban blind beliefs and superstitions in the state, and the call for urgent enactment of such a law has gained the proportions of a crescendo after the murder of rationalist researcher, Dr M M Kalburgi.

The CM came out with the above remarks during his participation at a congratulatory programme to Dalit rights activist, Dr D G Sagar, on Monday December 8, where representations seeking ban on superstitions and age old practices having no scientific relevance were presented to him by a number of people. It may be recalled that Swamiji of Manava Dharma Peeta, Nidumamidi Chennamalla Swamiji, had led a mega rally in the city recently, demanding implementation of law against superstitions.

In his reaction to this development, noted writer, Prof Chandrashekhar Patil said he is not in a position to say anything about it, as private television channels are not under the control of the government. Some astrologers like Dr Maharshi Anand Guruji and Harish Kashyap opined that astrological predictions, if done properly and by learned men, are accurate and scientific. They held themselves against daily predictions and programmes run by people not having thorough knowledge about astrology. K S Vimala, president of Janavadi Sangha pitched for total ban on predictions, accusing astrologers of spreading unfounded belief systems through predictions by having a firm grip on prime time on television. She added that a stronger demand to ban such programmes was made based on unwarranted developments like murder of Prof M M Kalburgi, and that the CM had rightly responded to the just demands of the people.

If people can solve their problems with help of astrologer and superstition let them do. What is the harm on it and why to interfere in people's personal choice. Majority of the people following superstitions in India. If govt banned this BJP will use this as material in next election and Congress will lose the votes from all communities. My request to the DK-Udupi ministers and Congress leaders to convince CM to this kind of ideas.

    Mr. Thimmappa,

You should make a cave your abode. There is no other way to be blind to what is going on around you. When the government offers any service, it does so with hopes that people make benefit out of it, prosper, earn and help the nation grow by paying taxes. TV or any other broadcast medium is for spreading awareness and knowledge. There can be entertainment too but to a limited extent. For example, watching DD channels, one can gain very helpful information and knowledge.

Of-course some private channels air useless MIL-DIL saga or love story serials that make people glued to the idiot box. Well, the channels also generate revenue through posh advertisements.

When asking who he/you are for questioning, please also remember that anybody can question you about what/why/when you are doing/saying anything. We are living in a society, not doing a 'one-man-show' !

Mr Ramesh, there are many fools including our ministers who believe in these predictions. recently in our own Dakshina Kannada a government employee committed suicide believing in a prediction that Something bad will befall on his son. these Astrologers mint money at the expense of uneducated poor people. creating a sense of fear, causing waste of time and energy of people and fleecing valuable money are part and parcel of the job of these astrologers. I am sure the Channels will go to court. We have to wait and watch to see how things will unfold. I am happy that Siddu has taken a very correct decision after a long time.

This age of uncertainty in economical order, employment, false promise by politicians make the people fear psycho lead believe in astrology prediction of these gurus in TV channels. If CM wanted to stop them, there will a reaction from certain section of the people and gurus and their chelas.Hope it won't be another political issue.Best thing is that education system in the country should be changed whereby students will understand the society differently, rationally.
